I tried SNES9x Euphoria again, turns out the performance sucked because the frameskip was set to 3 by default, I changed it to 0 and it ran beautifully. Did I solve it after all this time?

In order to cinch it, I thought I'd try beating the first dungeon in Super Mario World which I have never been able to do on a PSP before without crashing the system. Why not right? I didn't expect any problems to occur, but it would be a historic moment. Anyway, I got all the way up to the first boss, and right upon entering the boss door, the entire screen became BLOOD RED. I immediately panicked and looked through the settings to see if there was one that might fix it, gave up and returned to the game to find out that yep, it froze as well. (I panicked because I thought I would die from not being able to see anything, but in the end I had nothing to worry about, lol)

never have I been so traumatized from an SNES game D=

Hey i just thought. I have three working PSPs currently. Shouldn't I be testing out some local multiplayer games? But dang. This is a huge undertaking. Guess I'll start by making a list of games to check out.

I figure most games will fall into one of several categories.
Co-op games are ideal but these are rare.
PSP has a few trading card games, which is wild. Those will be the most interesting.
The only fighting games I need to bother with are Tekken.
The worst lot to deal with is racing games, the PSP has so many of them but racing never lends itself to good multiplayer since there is a tendency for one player to pull ahead and just stay there for the entire race. WOW FUN
What else? Field Commander? Oh, hey, yeah.
Does Final Fantasy Tactics have PvP? That sounds horrible. Must try.
    Dissidia.
Phantasy Star, wait does that have co-op local? If so holy shit.
    Sonic Rivals.
Fat Princess I just wish it didn't have blood and wasn't named Fat Princess, because of this it has to be played by adults.
TNT Racers omg. It's Micro Machines for PSP, what is better than that??
    Puzzle Quest.
Pangya assuming anyone really wants to play a golf game multiplayer.

This means I might even check out the Worms series, even though I've already decided those are trash. I mean, we had fun playing it on the PS1 passing the controller around. But it has sooo many issues. It's so easy to accidentally mess something up and end up wasting your turn. edit: oh fuck there's also yugioh. There are six or seven of those "yugioh tag force" games on psp but I still only played the first two because uuuuuunnngh

Editing … GBA actually ran fine to me, but I felt the emulators were bad for unrelated reasons. For instance there was one that prevented the volume meter and the battery meter that normally shows up when you press the home button while running a PSP game. That is to say, there was literally no way to see your remaining battery level or current volume setting without exiting the emulator completely and booting back to the PSP home screen. I'm sorry but that just instantly makes your app unusable. It's specifically for that reason I tried a second GBA emulator, but in the second one, I didn't like that each and every time you access the emulator menu for any reason, the only way back to the game was to manually scroll through the options to the one that says "resume game" and select it. (seriously wtf. Like even if you were going to do that, why wouldn't resume game be the default choice)

(Although it's been a while since I bothered with the NES one, maybe it has issues I didn't find to be a problem before.) And the only thing wrong with the SNES one is the performance. I remember trying two different SNES emulators years ago, both sucked, I was told the situation had improved since then, and hell, maybe it has for all I know, but the performance is still noticeably bad.

Performance usn't the only thing that's important. PSP would have been the perfect way to play SNES games, the button/dpad layout is so well suited to it! I'm selling one of my PSPs, and figured I'd try to upgrade the CFW to permanent CFW. Back when I first hacked my PSP in 2015 or so, it used to be that only the original fat model PSP can have it permanent. This is not a big deal, in fact it matters so little to me that the act of making it available to all PSP models seems like a bad thing almost since it forces everyone to go through the hassle of switching, if only because one might as well.

But my question is, is it safe to install CFW on a PSP if it has another CFW installed already. I thought I could be extra safe and install official firmware 6.61 to "cleanse" the system of the old CFW before installing the new CFW. But just now I tried and it won't let me because it says 6.61 is already installed.

I should probably just leave it alone..

Editing … Yes, that's what the plugin does. It comes with additional perks on top of that like being able to fine tune the brightness, and having the brightness level be displayed as a number each time you change it. With it installed, pressing the brightness button toggles between 20, 40, 60, and 80. Or you can fine tune by using the dpad while the shoulder buttons are held down. (You'd think this would result in accidentally changing brightness in certain games, but it hasn't really happened to me yet. Thankfully I've adjusted to using analog for most PSP games, since they tend to default to it.) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=osTt_z5G5aU

An experienced gamer would check the slider position as a habit but a young child wouldn't necessarily remember to do that.

One late night I tried the PSP port of Mario 64 and I was greeted w "Itsa me!! Mario!!!!" First thing I do is turn the volume down, but I was already at the lowest volume. My only choices are "all of China knows you're here" or mute. The game itself also doesn't have any options other than stereo / mono / headset.

PSP port of Doom had the same issue. Fucking loud or mute. There are volume settings for music and sfx but changing them had no effect. I guess they're simply there as a leftover from the PC version, the modder who ported the game didn't bother to program them to work on the PSP. It's kind of interesting from a technical standpoint, in addition to being hilarious. That said, I swear I started Doom 1 from the select prompt but it was Doom 2 that booted up, so maybe the whole thing was just a fubar coded piece of shit and I shouldn't read too much into it.

Anyway I would pin it on them being homebrew but these are not isolated incidents. Gradually over time I would find that PSP games are really loud on the lowest volume setting. In fact I used to LIKE this about the PSP. "Hey, the game is the volume I want by default how convenient is that!" And it means I can quickly toggle between sound on/off for when I want to yell at my mom to make me hot pockets. When a game had volume that actually worked the way it should e.g. LittleBigPlanet PSP, I found it really strange and I somehow looked down on the game for it. Like you'd have to increase the volume meter to halfway to be able to hear the game. How laborious! And I can no longer mute the game on a whim when I want it! Whack!

I would imagine that this flaw of the PSP would "ruin" the system for me and the only reason it hasn't (thus far at least) is because so many games let you adjust music/sfx volume in the settings, thereby bailing out the system on an individual game basis. Come to think of it, after a certain point I probably began to use this feature in every single PSP game that offers it, without fail, often lowering the sfx to 40% if not lower (and often disabling music altogether) without ever really stopping to notice the fact of it. If not for the ability to do this, this flaw could very well have been the PSP's equivalent of the way the OLED Vita's minimum screen brightness is locked to Complete Ocular Destruction. At least with Vita there is a plugin that addresses the screen thing, but the PSP does not have one to fix the sound. At least, I don't think there is one.

tl;dr - I'm getting old and can't enjoy anything anymore

In fact I put an unexpected amount of hours in Sims Castaway on PSP way back when, I think 2017, before I even had cfw meaning it was actually a physical copy. The only reason I stopped was because the game kept crashing during a later island when I started planting stuff. Normally I'd blame the game for crashing, but I think it may have been because I used to leave my PSP's WLAN switch on, which I was told causes memory leaks on the 3k model which causes games to crash. And I think the guy who said this was actually telling the truth!! Flatout on PSP used to crash constantly for me, but down the road I gave the game another chance and didn't encounter any issues. There is no reason to have the WLAN switch on anymore so I always considered playing Castaway again. If it doesn't work I could always try on Vita assuming that makes a difference.

Editing … Is the battery fine? A lot of PSP batteries are swollen now. Guess it's their time to die.

Editing … Yeah I hear about that. Hasn't happened to me yet. Truth be told I actually turned my PSP around and half expected to see swelling, but nope. I think I have a spare charger someplace if I can find it. It's a one piece charger, hard to find on ebay.

I'm mega impressed with the battery life of psp, I've put 6 hours of ffvii into it without charging.
