I'm selling one of my PSPs, and figured I'd try to upgrade the CFW to permanent CFW. Back when I first hacked my PSP in 2015 or so, it used to be that only the original fat model PSP can have it permanent. This is not a big deal, in fact it matters so little to me that the act of making it available to all PSP models seems like a bad thing almost since it forces everyone to go through the hassle of switching, if only because one might as well.

But my question is, is it safe to install CFW on a PSP if it has another CFW installed already. I thought I could be extra safe and install official firmware 6.61 to "cleanse" the system of the old CFW before installing the new CFW. But just now I tried and it won't let me because it says 6.61 is already installed.

I should probably just leave it alone..

Editing … Oh. I'm googling answers to this and something just occurred to me. This PSP technically doesn't have CFW installed. At least not until I launch the CFW. Hence it not being permanent CFW. Derp.

Editing … Meaning that it should be perfectly safe to just launch the new CFW and then launch the thing that makes it permanent. As it stands the old CFW is nothing more than an eboot on the PSP like any other game.

Editing … I did it. It works. Getting the brightness plugin was confusing however. The steps for enabling it are different from the old CFW and I had to figure it out without a tutorial.

Editing … Brightness plugin? Is there a way to make the PSP's display less bright? Even the lowest brightness setting is a little too bright for me.

Editing … Yes, that's what the plugin does. It comes with additional perks on top of that like being able to fine tune the brightness, and having the brightness level be displayed as a number each time you change it. With it installed, pressing the brightness button toggles between 20, 40, 60, and 80. Or you can fine tune by using the dpad while the shoulder buttons are held down. (You'd think this would result in accidentally changing brightness in certain games, but it hasn't really happened to me yet. Thankfully I've adjusted to using analog for most PSP games, since they tend to default to it.) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=osTt_z5G5aU

Editing … I just wish there was something similar for volume. PSP has a thing where the lowest volume after mute is "medium or slightly too loud" in 99 percent of games.
