Damn, my PC just flat-out restarted!
And by that, I mean that it ran into a blue screen of death and it crashed so hard that my PC was unable to even show the blue screen, it just appeared frozen (I thought my mouse wasn't working and I heard the "USB disconnected" sound before the crash) and then restarted. According to BlueScreenView, it was because of CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. Windows did install an update a couple days ago, but it's weird that it's giving me issues now and not those couple days ago. I hope it doesn't happen again anytime soon...

I hate it when something changes without my consent. For some reason, the fonts in Windows 10 were suddenly anti-aliased / smoothed. I do not like smoothing. I like it raw. Thankfully there's registry edits which will help here. It's just annoying that these things get enforced and the average user probably doesn't know a thing or two about registry changes. I also disabled font smoothing in Firefox using about:config.

I just had a thought, maybe the reason my laptop feels so hot is bc the keyboard area is aluminum? On a plastic chassis it wouldn't warm up as much.

Also starting to think this is why an all-in-one is better. They presumably run just as hot but at least the heat isn't as close to you and is pointed away. You need to plug in your own keyboard but maybe this is a small price to pay?

But then again, the port situation would suck ass on an all-in-one, so nevermind. I guess it depends what you are using it for.

I have a computer question for Husky. And nod too I guess.
On this laptop I never signed in bc it was all ready to use out of the box, rather than starting from a clean boot. According to the lock screen I am signed as "Dell" and there is no PIN, I can just click and begin using it. So I just use it like that.

My question is, should I sign in regardless? I was not planning to bc I can still do everything so who cares. In fact I actually like not being signed in. It feels like how Windows XP/7 did it. But I'll sign in if there is a serious downside or risk in not doing so that I am failing to conceive of. Lmk what you guys would do.

Klem told me it is actually possible to factory reset a Windows laptop. So just now I search yt how to do it:

For the record, does doing this remove your account too or no?

But I already moved all my roms to an external hdd and cleared my browser history. So I changed my sign in PIN to a really long one and was about to yeet the laptop to the sidewalk until I realized it still displays my first and last name on startup. Meh. Guess I'll try to get it recycled at a Staples or something. I wonder if Costco does it, that would be more convenient for me.

Just as long as I know it started and hit the point of no return. But what ended up happening is the screen went black at some point while it was preparing the reset, so l press spacebar to see if anything happens and it just went back to Windows. The settings window was still open but the reset dialogue box was gone. I did see a DOS prompt window for like a second but then it went away. Weird.

I just found the usb hard drive we got a million years ago. Seagate I think.
It uses mini usb. It's THAT OLD.
Also found a 8gb usb stick.

Can't wait to find out if they still work. xD If not then at least I have another mini usb for my PSPs.

I started up the laptop again to check the stats
Windows 10 Home, 4GB ram, 2 Ghz, 421 GB storage

Those specs do not seem outright terrible. What does it take to make a laptop not slow? Does it just have to be not old/used?

I have another one that is Intel Core i5 5200 2.2GHZ
    8GB Ram, 250GB SSD, Windows 11 Home
It runs MUCH BETTER. It crashes in the middle of a game whenever I run MTG Arena but I suppose any used laptop will do that. Would be nice if I can get one that runs it though..

It's completely black inside and out, all plastic, has sort of a matte finish. Very low profile design, almost no logos or stickers whatsoever. 15 inch I think. Lenovo ideapad. The charger is also not bulky at all, it's practically the same size as a third party Nintendo Switch Lite charger. I should try to get one identical to this but with better specs.

Editing … It won't fix it Rukk. If you get an SSD you won't have enough RAM for today. I have 64GB RAM and right now I just quit everything but my antivirus to test it. All the things you want running like steam, VPN etc are stopped, and I'm still using 13% of my RAM just using a browser. If you only have 32GB, which is still a good amount, then you're over a quarter of your resources done before you try to do anything. Old laptops just need throwing away. There's a guy on Youtube who shows you how to build gaming PCs on a budget. You should try that route instead. RAM is dirt cheap and so are some components, and some give amazing results for the money. I'll try to see if I can find him again.

Though it's still fine for my needs these days. Optimizing your Windows goes a long way. A debloated Windows 10 LTSC 2021 runs totally fine on my Windows tablet and only uses 1.1GB RAM when idle. A non-debloated version easily chucks 1.5GB RAM (though it depends on how much RAM you have - the more RAM you have, the more RAM Windows takes).

I dug up the desktop PC I used to use before I moved. It's the one I originally started making my Aladdin game in RPG Maker on. The computer has been in storage for years. Just now I plugged it in to see if it still works. It gives me a message saying Windows failed to start, and that hardware changes may be to blame. (What hardware changes?) It recommended I do something called system repair so I said yes. It's doing that now but it's taking a while.

What are my chances do you think? Is this computer fucked or naw?

It's also telling me that if I attached a device to this computer recently, such as a camera or portable music player, I should remove them and restart the computer. Well no shit, I have a monitor attached and it isn't the exact same monitor as before, but if I unplug it then how would I see anything.

Editing … According to this reddit thread I can download something called Hirens and put it on a USB stick and it is able to solve some startup issues. According to replies, it actually works. "Download Hirens, it creates a bootable USB with a number of tools on it, including ones to fix startup issues. After you create the USB boot your PC from it. You may need to go into the BIOS and point it to the USB as the boot drive. Once Hirens has started you'll see a Windows desktop with a "Utilities" folder. Open it, look for the "Windows Recovery" folder. In it is Lazesoft's Windows Recovery. Run it and select the "One Click" option. That has fixed a number of boot issues for me when helping friends and family. I've used it maybe a dozen times, it hasn't failed me yet."

Editing … If it's not starting up correctly, then the filesystem or the entire hard drive got corrupted, or a very important part of the hardware (maybe a RAM stick or the GPU) has died. It could also be that your boot configuration got lost because the motherboard's battery died, and you would have to set up certain options in the BIOS again. Maybe you used to boot Windows using legacy boot, but since all the BIOS options have reverted to standard, the compatibility support module (CSM) might have been deactivated, and therefor Windows can't boot.
