I dug up the desktop PC I used to use before I moved. It's the one I originally started making my Aladdin game in RPG Maker on. The computer has been in storage for years. Just now I plugged it in to see if it still works. It gives me a message saying Windows failed to start, and that hardware changes may be to blame. (What hardware changes?) It recommended I do something called system repair so I said yes. It's doing that now but it's taking a while.

What are my chances do you think? Is this computer fucked or naw?

Editing … Its saying system repair failed to fix the issue automatically. My only option is to shut down. It's also telling me that if I attached a device to this computer recently, such as a camera or portable music player, I should remove them and restart the computer. Well no shit, I have a monitor attached and it isn't the exact same monitor as before, but if I unplug it then how would I see anything.

Editing … Granted, I do have both a wifi dongle *and* a bluetooth dongle plugged in the USB ports. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take them out and see if that works. Although they were there before..

Editing … Even after taking out the dongles, system repair still failed to fix the issue. It displays a log showing various error signatures, that are maybe a clue as to what is actually causing this. I'll take a snap using my phone.

Editing … I dunno if this is related to the issue, but I notice the monitor blinks on and off incessantly during bootup but stays on just fine in windows for the system repair and while on the dos screen prompt that tells me Windows failed to start normally. EDIT: It's probably unrelated. The monitor does that automatically whenever it isn't receiving a video signal.

Editing … According to this reddit thread I can download something called Hirens and put it on a USB stick and it is able to solve some startup issues. According to replies, it actually works. "Download Hirens, it creates a bootable USB with a number of tools on it, including ones to fix startup issues. After you create the USB boot your PC from it. You may need to go into the BIOS and point it to the USB as the boot drive. Once Hirens has started you'll see a Windows desktop with a "Utilities" folder. Open it, look for the "Windows Recovery" folder. In it is Lazesoft's Windows Recovery. Run it and select the "One Click" option. That has fixed a number of boot issues for me when helping friends and family. I've used it maybe a dozen times, it hasn't failed me yet."

Editing … So I'll do that.. maybe next year. I'd need another computer to do it, which defeats the point of me trying to get this one to work. Dx

Editing … If it's not starting up correctly, then the filesystem or the entire hard drive got corrupted, or a very important part of the hardware (maybe a RAM stick or the GPU) has died. It could also be that your boot configuration got lost because the motherboard's battery died, and you would have to set up certain options in the BIOS again. Maybe you used to boot Windows using legacy boot, but since all the BIOS options have reverted to standard, the compatibility support module (CSM) might have been deactivated, and therefor Windows can't boot.
