It's amazing how OCD people in comments are about lets players playing the exact same way that they play. They don't even have to lose or waste a bunch of time, they just have to play a little sloppier than the viewer. Like, so long as they're not losing over and over for some stupid reason, I don't give a shit.

I remember in a time before the internet, my friend would record his play sessions on the PS2 on VHS and give them to me. I would sit and watch them, blown away by the graphics, as I only had a PS1 at the time :P After that, I used to record my own play sessions and then watch them back. I used to really enjoy that for some reason. I can't stand actual Let's Plays nowadays though. I have no interest in hearing someone talking over the game.

Editing … I used to get really annoyed when I'd find a lets play because I'd generally just be looking for game footage. Now longplays make it really easy to just find the footage and I'm a big fan of Best Friends and Game Grumps.

Editing … I imagine you simply haven't found the right one yet. They're very varied, after all. From playing without talking to the audience, to commenting on what's on screen, to talking about somthing else entirely, to just dickin' around, …

Editing … Well to be fair, most of my annoyance comes from how people play the game, so if there was someone who was really, really good at the game, then I'd probably like it. Assuming they didn't talk in that annoying overexcited 'youtuber' voice.

Editing … I like energy. It contrasts my quiet, toned down personality. That's why I like over the top, rambunctious fuckers like nod and Zach. Sometimes I do get frustrated during a lets play of a game I've played if they're doing badly. Oh God, that Grumps Civ V playthrough was a train wreck. Thank God for that Jewish Mom voice.

Here's two ways you can make sure I will not watch your LP:

    1. You're playing a 2D game on an emulator with sprite smoothing turned on. Seriously, I don't understand how people my age that grew up with the SNES actually think that's a good idea. It looks terrible.

    2. You start each of your 15-minute parts with a 1-minute long intro because you fancy yourself some big-shot video producer. If I have to skip through something each time a new part comes up, no thank you.

Editing … One for me is if they prioritize their interaction with the audience. The reason I watch let's players is to see their interaction with the game.

Editing … I like his solo vids okay, but I prefer videos that focus less on the comedy and more on the opinions, like Digibro and TheMysteriousMrEnter. My favorite Jontron vid is that one about Blizzard because it's focused on getting out a thought with some bits of humor thrown in as the cherry on top. As for lets plays, I really like early Best Friends and Arin/Dan Grumps.

Editing … He has sort of a random, Youtube Poop style of humor that isn't my favorite. When I laugh at his videos, it's usually more because of the crazy content he's playing, like those horrifying Frozen games, or that Pokemon ripoff that calls the Professor Elf Monster, or that bizarre talking cat movie.

Editing … Yeah, I'm right there with you, Retro. A lot of my fav LP'ers have since transitioned into Twitch streaming, so now whenever they do upload archives to YouTube, I have to deal with them constantly interacting with the audience, and that terrible chat window that they've embedded into the video. Those videos aren't fun to me. I'm not big on sitting in on those streams to begin with, but they're even more horrible when you're watching them after the fact. It's weird that in the age of on-demand video and entire seasons getting released in one go on Netflix, we're also going backwards with live streaming. I like content that stands on its own and is timeless. My favorite LP'ers are the ones that have a good sense of humor, but also know their shit. They're knowledgable, skilled, and just have a lot of love and passion for the games that they're playing. So naturally none of the LP'ers I'm subscribed to fall into "mainstream" category.
