Beyond Good & Evil
Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Ubisoft and released in late 2003 for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, Xbox and GameCube platforms. A full HD re-mastered version of the game was released on Xbox Live Arcade in March 2011 and on PlayStation Network in June 2011. The story follows the adventures of Jade, an investigative reporter and martial artist, who works with a resistance movement to reveal a planet-wide alien conspiracy. The player controls Jade and allies, solving puzzles, fighting enemies, and obtaining photographic evidence. Michel Ancel, creator of the Rayman series, envisioned the game as the first part of a trilogy. Beyond Good & Evil was a commercial failure, but was critically acclaimed, receiving a nomination for "Game of the Year" at the 2004 Game Developers Choice Awards. A sequel, Beyond Good & Evil 2, is said to be currently in development. Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure game with elements of puzzle-solvin …

Saved!I've been looking at footage of the 20th Anniversary Edition. This looks like a much greater effort than the HD rerelease they did for PS3 and 360. However I am unconvinced that this is much better than playing the game via emulation at full HD and 60 fps.
The Switch port is locked to 30fps which is a joke for a 20+ year old game. Overall the new graphical assets look like a bit of sidegrade. The new environmental textures look pretty nice, but the new lighting makes everything look a little washed out, particularly on the character models. Jade has always had a swarthy look to her but she looks much paler here. There are other subtle visual changes I'm not a fan of, like the distortion on Secundo that makes it obvious he's a hologram now looks much more subtle.
My first impression with the audio, particularly the OST was very negative. They apparently rerecorded an entirely new orchestral soundtrack, and the first track I compared was Dancing With the DomZ.
Old: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUUGVVQjUNk
New: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLuEgopt1eM
Particularly the alien chanting that starts around 40 seconds in is completely absent in the new version, which I consider an immense downgrade. However, after perusing more highlights from the soundtrack this one track doesn't seem representative of the overall quality. The other tracks seem to be much more faithfully recreated. Dancing with the DomZ was one of my favorite tracks in the game but I'm not nearly as irked here as I was with something like the Demon's Souls remake, which I whined about incessantly on that page.
From browsing Reddit they have hilariously managed to recreate the bug that causes Double H to vanish, making further progress impossible. I had enormous issues with the camera while playing the PS3 version, as well as brutal physics bugs in certain areas. I'm unsure if these have been carried over. The amount of DRM on the PC versions is exhaustingly stupid. Naturally one should expect Epic and Steam's own DRM depending which storefront you buy from. Then of course Ubisoft nearly always insists you create a Ubisoft account as well. But then they have the temerity to add Denuvo to a 20 year old game that has been available on GoG for over a decade, DRM free. You aint beating the pirates on this one, morons. You're only hurting your paying customers.
At this point I have bought this game four times, on PS2, then Gamecube, then PS3 and finally GoG, and I have had significant issues with every version except for the Gamecube. It has practically become tradition for a BG&E port to fall short of expectations. I have little interest in throwing down more money to play this again, but most of Ubisoft's titles come to Playstation Plus, so I wouldn't mind giving it a try on there. Overall I am amused at the prospect that this release will bring more prospective customers to the series, only for them to join the old-school fans in disappointment with the sequel scrapping everything special about the original.-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … "They apparently rerecorded an entirely new orchestral soundtrack" I HATE it when they do that in remasters. The original midi tracks have a charm to them and the composition was made to work with the old sound effects. Making everything orchestral fucks up the balance and original intent. It's like removing the fog in silent hill of shadow of the colossus just because now it's possible to have greater draw distances without pop-in.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … I never played beyond good and evil. I had it on ps2 I think but wasn't really in the mindset to play it at the time. I was thinking of picking up the remaster but reading this I might just get the old version because I do get finicky when the updates do not match the original. Like in the FF10 remake where the backgrounds and the characters look too separated because of the AI up scaling.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … The beyond good and evil 2 trailer looks horrible to me btw. It's cringe and it should die. That monkey represents everything I hate about modern media.
-
Saved!SandvichEditing … The PS2 version had a dumb audio glitch where often a sound effect would loop over and over until you hit a loading screen. Like I said, the game being busted is practically tradition at this point. This modern port looks to be a lot better than the PS3 one. BG&E is one of my most heavily replayed games of all time and I think it still largely holds up. Some would describe the gameplay as shallow but I think the game is more than the sum of its parts, and while it spreads itself a bit thin by featuring combat, stealth, racing, puzzles etc. it's exactly as good in all areas as necessary to be memorable.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … Sounds like psychonauts where every level has totally different gameplay. mmmh, I see the game cube version is not that expensive. It that the one you would recommend or the new remaster?
-
Saved!SandvichEditing … I'd have to have hands on with the new remaster to say for sure, but if you don't mind the lower rez and frame rate the Gamecube is a safe bet. The Xbox version also doesn't have the flaws of the PS2. Emulation might be the best way to go if you're into that sort of thing. The GoG version is also quite good apart from the fact that it doesn't have controller support, and I disagree with anyone who says the game plays fine with keyboard and mouse.
-
Saved!SandvichEditing … You could make the Psychonauts comparison but personally I've felt Arkham Asylum is a decent analog. Arkham's combat can't compete with Devil May Cry, its stealth can't compete with Splinter Cell, and its environmental puzzles can't compete with Zelda, but it's good enough at all of them that I enjoy it more than a lot of games in those other series. BG&E is like this, plus it's elevated by its own unique charming atmosphere.
-
Saved!KlemoibEditing … Oh yeah emulation..... Mmmmmh.... It is free..... Mmmmmmh.... I'll think about it. Otherwise I don't mind low res. I'd just play it on my crt then.

Saved! Finally took the plunge and bought this on GoG. Damn do those visuals ever hold up well in full HD. No gamepad support though, and keyboard and mouse controls are a little awkward. Why, why does it have to be so hard to get a definitive version of this gem of a game?

Saved! This game sold so badly that in Canada it came for free packaged with string cheese. https://www.destructoid.com/oh-canada-beyond-good-evil-is-a-cheese-pack-in-122277.phtml
-
Saved!I was able to beat it so fast a couple of weeks ago that I did a new playthrough on my gamertag and cleaned up those achievements I've been missing for the last 5 years lol. Finally, 200GS.
-
Saved!SandvichEditing … I bought it on PSN and was annoyed it didn't have a Platinum. Just as well. Thought it was a pretty shoddy port anyway. Kept coming unstuck from ledges I was sidling across and plummeting off the game map requiring reloading my last save point.
-
Saved!Filly VanilliEditing … Oh jeez, I've played the HD version 3 times now and only encountered that issue in one of my playthroughs (though it did kill me like 3 times before it finally cut that shit out). I've encountered some other random glitches, but most of them were harmless. Looking at Ubisoft's current gen games, though, technical problems from them don't surprise me anymore lol. ETA: I do find the HD version preferable mostly because I feel like it controls better, especially with the combat.
-
Saved!SandvichEditing … I recall it happening in the Nutripils factory right before you see an Alpha Sections guard without his helmet, and in the stealth sequence right before you're caught and chased by General Kehck (and yes, I did have to look up his name). In the former case it would drop me entirely off the map, forcing me to lose all progress after my last save, and in the latter it would usually drop me on the head of a guard, resulting in instant death from the security drones. I also recall a host of camera issues, with one particular WTF moment occurring during a looter chase where a door slams shut behind your hovercraft after you pass through it. In my case the camera ended up trapped on the wrong side of the door. Overall for me the HD visuals didn't make up for all the lousy drawbacks. Since Steam now offers refunds I might give that version a go some day.
-
Saved!Filly VanilliEditing … lol yeah there was a crazy amount of camera issues. I was able to tolerate those a lot better than the asshole final boss though. Today was the first time I beat him without dying, but I still had to use 2 K-bups and I had like 15 hearts' worth of health at the end.

Saved!Just cranked through a playthrough of this in three days for a last-minute video.

Kaleb Grein wrote his opinion about Beyond Good & EvilSaved! My initial impression of BG&E was that it was a little cheesy, but that was probably a show of its age. Regardless, by the end I was floored by what turned out to be a deep story with well-expressed emotion and wonderful presentation value. Melee combat is slightly mundane, but other than that, everything's done right including an urban twist on Zelda, fun stealth mechanics, and well-implemented co-op. It's all sweetened with a cinematic camera, atmospheric music, and powerful voice work. Hard to believe it was originally made in French.

In likeflynn wrote his opinion about Beyond Good & EvilSaved!A truly beautiful game, with an excellent story, compelling characters, good controls and fair challenge; what I specially love about this game is that it doesn't abuse of it's charm; most games would throw at your face it's awesomeness thus making it look silly rather than great, but not BG&E, it knows what it is and what it wants, and is the kind of game you fall in love with; truly worthy of it's legacy.

IceTheRetroKid wrote her opinion about Beyond Good & EvilSaved! When I feel tired of Zelda putting me through the same old motions, I have to thank games like these. The characters are so down to earth and relatable, the exploring, it reminds me of Zelda, the puzzles, the dungeons. It all works so well together. The only thing holding it back, it's too criminally short for its genre. Oh would I have given anything for this game to go on longer. I also wish it performed better so we could get more of these awesome games. Come on Michel Ancel, come on, Ubisoft, let's pump out Beyond Good & Evil 2!

Big Boss wrote his opinion about Beyond Good & EvilSaved! The cult hit Beyond Good & Evil has a lot of cojones to borrow it's title from Nietzche. Is it well justified? Eh... Playing a strong female protagonist is a nice change of pace and the game does have a certain amount of originality, but the core gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. It does combine stealth elements with zelda-like combat and item collection, and even a little racing and space-crafting, but doesn't do any particularly well. Controls never feel tight enough, especially in combat. The game world is too small imo, as is the story, which doesn't really get interesting until it's pretty much over. The cartoony character designs with the serious story didn't jive with me. Not a bad game but nothing special in my opinion.
-
Leo Barbosa wrote his opinion about Beyond Good & EvilSaved! The plot is very interesting, and gets better at the end, but something is missing, some things should have happened but doesn't and a lot of things are just ignored. This game has a very nice gameplay, and good mechanics. The graphics are smooth and the soundtrack is amazing. The GameCube version is the best.
