I've been looking at footage of the 20th Anniversary Edition. This looks like a much greater effort than the HD rerelease they did for PS3 and 360. However I am unconvinced that this is much better than playing the game via emulation at full HD and 60 fps.

The Switch port is locked to 30fps which is a joke for a 20+ year old game. Overall the new graphical assets look like a bit of sidegrade. The new environmental textures look pretty nice, but the new lighting makes everything look a little washed out, particularly on the character models. Jade has always had a swarthy look to her but she looks much paler here. There are other subtle visual changes I'm not a fan of, like the distortion on Secundo that makes it obvious he's a hologram now looks much more subtle.

My first impression with the audio, particularly the OST was very negative. They apparently rerecorded an entirely new orchestral soundtrack, and the first track I compared was Dancing With the DomZ.

    New: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLuEgopt1eM

Particularly the alien chanting that starts around 40 seconds in is completely absent in the new version, which I consider an immense downgrade. However, after perusing more highlights from the soundtrack this one track doesn't seem representative of the overall quality. The other tracks seem to be much more faithfully recreated. Dancing with the DomZ was one of my favorite tracks in the game but I'm not nearly as irked here as I was with something like the Demon's Souls remake, which I whined about incessantly on that page.

From browsing Reddit they have hilariously managed to recreate the bug that causes Double H to vanish, making further progress impossible. I had enormous issues with the camera while playing the PS3 version, as well as brutal physics bugs in certain areas. I'm unsure if these have been carried over. The amount of DRM on the PC versions is exhaustingly stupid. Naturally one should expect Epic and Steam's own DRM depending which storefront you buy from. Then of course Ubisoft nearly always insists you create a Ubisoft account as well. But then they have the temerity to add Denuvo to a 20 year old game that has been available on GoG for over a decade, DRM free. You aint beating the pirates on this one, morons. You're only hurting your paying customers.

At this point I have bought this game four times, on PS2, then Gamecube, then PS3 and finally GoG, and I have had significant issues with every version except for the Gamecube. It has practically become tradition for a BG&E port to fall short of expectations. I have little interest in throwing down more money to play this again, but most of Ubisoft's titles come to Playstation Plus, so I wouldn't mind giving it a try on there. Overall I am amused at the prospect that this release will bring more prospective customers to the series, only for them to join the old-school fans in disappointment with the sequel scrapping everything special about the original.

Editing … "They apparently rerecorded an entirely new orchestral soundtrack" I HATE it when they do that in remasters. The original midi tracks have a charm to them and the composition was made to work with the old sound effects. Making everything orchestral fucks up the balance and original intent. It's like removing the fog in silent hill of shadow of the colossus just because now it's possible to have greater draw distances without pop-in.

Editing … I never played beyond good and evil. I had it on ps2 I think but wasn't really in the mindset to play it at the time. I was thinking of picking up the remaster but reading this I might just get the old version because I do get finicky when the updates do not match the original. Like in the FF10 remake where the backgrounds and the characters look too separated because of the AI up scaling.

Editing … The beyond good and evil 2 trailer looks horrible to me btw. It's cringe and it should die. That monkey represents everything I hate about modern media.

Editing … The PS2 version had a dumb audio glitch where often a sound effect would loop over and over until you hit a loading screen. Like I said, the game being busted is practically tradition at this point. This modern port looks to be a lot better than the PS3 one. BG&E is one of my most heavily replayed games of all time and I think it still largely holds up. Some would describe the gameplay as shallow but I think the game is more than the sum of its parts, and while it spreads itself a bit thin by featuring combat, stealth, racing, puzzles etc. it's exactly as good in all areas as necessary to be memorable.

Editing … Sounds like psychonauts where every level has totally different gameplay. mmmh, I see the game cube version is not that expensive. It that the one you would recommend or the new remaster?

Editing … I'd have to have hands on with the new remaster to say for sure, but if you don't mind the lower rez and frame rate the Gamecube is a safe bet. The Xbox version also doesn't have the flaws of the PS2. Emulation might be the best way to go if you're into that sort of thing. The GoG version is also quite good apart from the fact that it doesn't have controller support, and I disagree with anyone who says the game plays fine with keyboard and mouse.

Editing … You could make the Psychonauts comparison but personally I've felt Arkham Asylum is a decent analog. Arkham's combat can't compete with Devil May Cry, its stealth can't compete with Splinter Cell, and its environmental puzzles can't compete with Zelda, but it's good enough at all of them that I enjoy it more than a lot of games in those other series. BG&E is like this, plus it's elevated by its own unique charming atmosphere.

Editing … Oh yeah emulation..... Mmmmmh.... It is free..... Mmmmmmh.... I'll think about it. Otherwise I don't mind low res. I'd just play it on my crt then.
