- too much brutality for a kid's movie (even if it's on fantasy creatures, it doesn't sit right).
- dumb plot. Stupid values. Flat characters.
- a total shift in significance of the characters. Why? So that Tim Burton could stuff-dump his favorites Depp and Bonham Carter into this again. Like he does with all his last movies.
- choirs?! This isn't Lord of the Rings. The music totally doesn't fit in this universe. How come no one sees that?
- cookie-cutter filmmaking has struck again.

The VFX and the color palettes of some scenes are gorgeous, mostly; yet, sometimes too much of it is going on at the same time.

The bad outweigh the good far too strongly, really.
