Obviously an origin story. But of whom? Batman? Bruce? Penguin and the other villains? … Gordon? ……… Naah. It's the origin story of the city itself. Of the mafiosi, the police department, the key locations AND the characters. And I love it!

Honestly, I find the idea of a crime procedural in Gotham City brilliant. This setup lets you as the viewer get intimate with every character, their backgrounds, their motifs and everything. And the screenwriters have an easy job, too: provide another not-so-important gang war, drug dealer, corrupt cop or serial killer to make the city slowly become more and more deranged, as we know it – and every so often throw a new support character, or even tiny reference to an established character from the franchise, in there.

Editing … The usual fantasy aspect of the Batman francise is kept to a minimum (so far) and the characters still feel quite human – before all their individual freakish delusions kick in. Some decisions and depictions are weird and/or stupid, of course (i.e. Riddler, Zsasz) – but in all honesty, in what show DON'T you have that?
