Editing … Was it a coincidence that that sentence contained 10 words or are you just naturally witty? :P

Editing … The German word for 5, "fünf", is fun to say. Is it weird to have a word you enjoy saying just for the sake of how it sounds?

Editing … I do that all the time, the problem is that most words I enjoy are insulting, like "retarded" or "putas" which means "whores" in my language.

Editing … Nothing really, I just appreciated someone taking the time to chat about languages they knew :P Although I was surprised to hear that when counting above 20 the numbers are reversed when compared to English, i.e. "Twenty-One" in English, but "One and Twenty" in German

Editing … Right this is in German indeed switched compared to English. Do you know why we say eleven (elf) and twelve (zwölf) instead of "ten-one" and "ten-two" ?

Editing … Our ancesters had 12 as base for their counting system, then the decadic system was introduced they got problems spelling 11 as ten-one and 12 ten-two. They said a term for 11 and 12 similar to "one left" (ein übrig) and "two left" (zwei übrig). After a while it was changed to eleven and twelve. This is why you can partly order a dozen of something, just a thing of the past.

Editing … Yep the origin of the 12 as base is really old, you may wonder why anything regarding time is based on this. Its from ~2000 BC from the "new sumerian empire" (exact english name?), the sumerians loved 12 as it was their favourite number. This civilization is responsible for the script (no the egyptians followed close after here), math and astronomy. So they were able to measure the year exactly and introduced a system that is still used.
