Then didn't watch it for years, including the obligatory snobbish film student phase when I sneered upon everything Hollywood and Spielberg, then I grew up, watched it again, and came to realise what a finely crafted piece of cinema this actually is. Spielberg really went out of his way to make a movie that solely conveys the subjective viewpoint of a child (most adult are anonymous, only the friendly ones, like parents and the "nice" scientist, we actually get to see their faces).
