Was this not a religious figure before? @Stephanie Taylor @Pape Badiane. Discrimination against his noodliness offends all that have been touched by his noodly appendage.

Editing … I reckon I'll take my chances and say something a bloke from Kansas made up as a joke in 2005 isn't the one true God. It's a cheap laugh parodying someone's heartfelt religious beliefs and playing devil's advocate as though the joke is equally valid, it seems uncalled for to me. Some of the nicest people I know are very religious but not intolerant in the slightest Shige.

Editing … It may seem like a bit of a copout but there is no real way to continue a discussion along these lines once it gets personal. (Philosophy of Religion was my chosen subject before I left education and got a job so I have had this conversation many times.) As far as I am concerned it is equally as valid and people can believe / claim to believe in whatever they like. It is impossible to apply logic to something that claims to act outside of logic because it just ends up in an endless circular argument. Who says that FSM didn't tell Bobby Henderson to spread the word via a fake internet joke? It sounds silly but almost every religion has a bunch of really silly stories when you get down to it, people are just used to those stories as they have been exposed to them before. My favourites are "I spoke to god via a bush that was on fire.", "When you die two angels will ask you to state who your prophet is and if you answer incorrectly they will hit you with a shovel.", "I mistakenly cut off my sons head and then replaced it with an elephant head because I felt bad that that was what I could find at the time." and "I used magical stones to find a physical angel and gods teachings on a hill in america, I didn't show anyone for over four years and then when I did I only showed my family and very close friends. After that the angel took them away forever."

Editing … I can believe in a shoe being our savior if I want to. If it is my faith, if it gives me strength and if it helps me explain and accept the world as it is, it is my religion. Who are you to judge what a religion is and what's not? And "the one true God" – are you serious? There is no one "true" god. The "truthfulness" of a god depends on your personal faith. And that's hard to generalize, standardize and dogmatize with 8 billion people and more than 2o different religions. I think it's pretty disrespectful towards other religions to claim that there is "one true God". Speaking of "not intolerant" …

Editing … You don't believe a shoe is our saviour though Shige and nobody actually believes in a Flying Spaghetti Monster either, hence neither are religions. Surprised you're making me explain that religions contradict each other and can't all be right. And no it's not disrespectful to claim your religion is right and the other is wrong, intolerance isn't about whether you disagree, it's about tolerance towards the people you disagree with.

Editing … Don't feel bad. Discussing religion on the internet is as close as you can get to fanboys discussing the console war as far as valid discussion goes. FSM should still be a religious figure because it's not up to people to dismiss something outright because it seems stupid to them. I said it on another thread but having Religious figure be a mirror of the Real Person section is just asking for trouble, it should be 100% separated from both Real Person and Fictional Character sections of the database.

Editing … Not really much to feel bad about. The harshest things anyone's said is me being a bit blunt saying not every religion can be true and Shige pointing out I'm difficult to argue with (not exactly news to anyone) and misconstruing what I said a fair bit (never once mentioned my own beliefs, I'm agnostic if anyone's interested). I can take it, merry Christmas Shige.

Editing … This sentence still bugs me a bit: "Surprised you're making me explain that religions contradict each other and can't all be right." » If you're trying to determine one objective truth, then I agree that they can't be right. I don't really believe in one objective truth, though, when it comes to religion and I took for granted that this was obvious. It apparently isn't. Religion is a very subjective matter, if you ask me. Though, if I'm reading you correctly, for you it isn't a subjective matter. If you try to look at this conversation from my point of view for one second, you'll instantly see where you're being intolerant – out of my perspective. But clearly, I'm wrong for thinking so "openly" about other religions which are obviously false, so there's no point in continuing to argue about it. — Don't feel bad, Filly. You did nothing wrong.
