    I'm considering giving up alcohol.

My problem is that once I have one I want more, and then I don't stop until I run out of beer in the house or I need to for a reason, like I'm up for work.

I love that first ice cold beer after work but never any of the others, after that first one I'm just wasting money and ruining my body.

Editing … I hear that a lot that people enjoy the 1st beer but every beer after that is not adding anything for them. I think the problem is that the 1st one is fun and then you think “well that was fun. I want that fun again, so I’ll have another” but the effect is not the same because you can’t have your 1st beer again. It’s like that with crisps too. You eat a portion of crisps and think “well that was tasty. I want to experience that again” but the novelty is already worn off and you will only feel gross and ill if you keep eating more. People are shit at pacing themselves. Maybe people need time dependant junk food/beer dispensers. You can only get one junk food a day from your own personal junk food bank. Maybe it would be like a time based vending machine you can only operate after a predetermined number of hours. You can set it to once a day, once a week or even once a month or once a year.

Editing … To be fair, I can enjoy an ice cold coke after work as much as a beer, it's like the ritual of being done and finally chilling. But coke is just as bad.

Editing … That doesn't sound like a bad idea. Just like with smoking. People who want to quit chew gum in situations they would usually smoke in. Is there something healthier than beer that you enjoy and associate with chilling? I think people just like the ritual of preparing the drink and taking time to rest. You can do that with many drinks. Tea is great for that. You can make tea as easy or as complicated as you want or as hot or cold as you want.

Editing … hehe yes I guess it takes more processing to take out the alcohol and they want to cash in on the desperation of AA members too of course. If I remember beer without alcohol had some healthy aspects like anti-oxidants and some b vitamins. Plus there is no added sugar like in cola. I can’t really see anything wrong with it except for the calories maybe. It seems pretty okay actually if you take out the alcohol part.

I remember one time someone shoved a beer in my hands at a festival and then I was thinking "so what does this guy want me to do with this brown smelly fluid exactly? Does he want me to get rid of it for him? Should I throw it in the trash or flush it down the toilet?"

Editing … My nephew says he doesn't like beer. But he likes whiskey. It's like.. how?? I don't understand this at all. That stuff is so strong it's barely drinkable. Also, on a related note. My brother doesn't like stout beers, described them as "goopy". Its a thing where I didn't notice until he brought it up, but I can sort of see where he's coming from. That doesn't mean I dislike it, though.

Editing … Oh, a chance for my expertise to shine! An ice cold beer is the ultimate refeshment drink! A cold lager done right is so fucking nice I want one just typing it. Whisky is my second favourite drink, but I don't have a whisky to chill out or socialise lightly, I drink whisky when I want to get drunk. And drunk is a really good thing when you're older and have the experience, but for a young person it often causes all manner of problems, whisky isn't a noob drink. But whisky is perhaps my number 1 drink above beer when I think about it, if you offered me a night of good whisky vs a night of good beer I'd take the whisky. I can drink it though, slow and steady, young people down doubles mixed with coke and spew, I drink it neat and savour it. Stout and all those other rank beers can take a leap off a cliff, they ain't refreshing and they don't taste good like whisky or cold lager. Until the age of say, 30, I couldn't drink whisky or even any spirit neat, but as I got older I learned to appreciate them, and now I can tell you the difference between a 12 year and a 15 year Glenfidich. Spiced rum is fucking good too, again, you cannot drink it with a mixer it has to be neat. Vodka is the devil drink, no vodka tastes good, not even the most expensive in the world. People buy it because it's cheap and gets them drunk and tastes ok mixed with coke.

Someone once fed me expensive whiskey and it tasted amazing and I want to taste that again. Also someone made their own peach (wine??) and it was amazing. So sweet and burning. I wish I could have the taste without the alcohol though. I don't like getting drunk.

Editing … I like the feeling and it helps me go to sleep. But I decided stay away for other reasons. (carb avoidance, electrolyte retention, general health, and just to save $$$) Though, talking about it in this thread is seriously tempting me to start drinking again. It's an excellent sleep tonic. Though I think I'd mostly stick to the lemon-orange zest beer I had before, assuming I can still find it. (I think my taste adjusted to the lemon beer to the point that I don't like other beers anymore.) Prob won't, though. I actually think it will kill me.

Editing … …What?... You used alcohol to help you sleep!? That is completely dysfunctional and it makes you sound like an actual alcoholic. :-P Sure you turn off your consciousness a bit with alcohol but it is detrimental to the actual quality of your sleep. Humans should be able to go to sleep on their own if you are having difficulty there is definitely something not right. Maybe try to turn off all screens an hour before bedtime and turn down the lights too. Works like a charm.

Editing … "I always wake up after a few hours when I've had a drink" Actually.. this seems to happen to me regardless. Not always but sometimes. I often go in intending to sleep but it ends up being a nap. The trouble with beer though is that I'm more likely to need to take a leak which causes me to wake up prematurely. Anyway, Klem has the right idea. I don't want to need beer to sleep. It totally does sound bad, lol. Unfortunately, simply telling myself that isn't going to help. I often feel restless, whether or not I'm tired, so it sometimes may be hard to get myself to bed.

You have to emotionally be convinced or just design your life to make sleeping easy without having to think about it. (Automation of the lights and screens, timers etc.)
