    It's Egg's 25th birthday today! I hope he's playing Persona 3 up in heaven.

Editing … egg no longer exists, he is us now. (to look at it another way if there was one person left on earth then everyone would be that person) In fact I recently started playing Pokemon games, so I think I received a disproportionate piece of his soul.

Editing … I used to be like you though, I'd say death was the end, I was right because nobody could prove otherwise. I matured a lot when I had kids and then when I met my wife who introduced me into a loving, caring family that would actually be there. Since then a lot of my views have softened, especially religion. I still think God doesn't exist of course but you could say that I kind of follow the bibles teachings. Being lawful doesn't make you good.

Editing … material science can't explain consciousness, as far it's concerned consciousness doesn't even exist. So there is something unexplained there. But it may be true that the difference between one person and another is 100% material, so death is the end at least as far as that person's unique identity is concerned.

Editing … Death is the end, I'm sure. But it's fine to romanticise it if you want, and to have hope, and all the rest if that helps you. As long as you don't bother anybody else you can do anything you want. As far as I'm concerned I'd like to think Egg is happy now, and that my grandparents are watching out for me and all the rest. It makes me happy.

Editing … Everyone dies two deaths. The first one when your body dies and the second one when the last person who remembers you is gone. Rukk is right. Egg still exists because we do. People are just stories anyway, and as long as those stories live on, so does the person.

Editing … @Rockshard PhD What do you mean material science can't explain consciousness? It's not complicated: brain activity = consciousness. That's what every bit of evidence indicates. Likewise everything indicates that the cease of brain function means the end of consciousness/existence. Anything beyond that is idle and unfalsifiable speculation.

Editing … @Silent Gamer That sounds nice, but I'm sure Egg doesn't care at all about what we think because he, you know, no longer exists. I personally don't care what people will think of me after I die, because I'll be dead. The world will end with my death, as Egg's did for him. What happens after is entirely irrelevant. It's not about being a story, it's about being alive and able to think and feel and be self-aware. If nothing else happened in my life and I was confined to a room forever it wouldn't make my life any less precious and it wouldn't make me any more willing to part with it, because ceasing to exist is too terrible a concept to ever accept.

Editing … I feel sorry for Egg, and Pape, and everyone else who has ever died, because they didn't deserve oblivion. Death is just bad, full stop. There is no silver lining, no false continuation. If we all accept the reign of terror it really holds over us then maybe we'll work together better to avoid it. All of this romanticization is frankly counterproductive. We should hate death and nothing more.

By denying God you're basically freeing yourself from morals and ethics.

Editing … I can have my own moral code without religion or spirituality, thank you very much. Haven't you ever heard of secular humanism? Aside from that it's possible to think for oneself. Just because I don't believe in some metaphysical morality doesn't mean I don't have opinions about right and wrong. It's an entirely separate topic.

What and who he is is dependent on who you ask, so yes it is about stories. He still exists and will until everyone forgets him. I'm sorry death scares you so much. It must be an awful way to live.

Editing … just thought I'd leave this quote here: "One of the dramatic characteristics of experience is being with another person and suddenly seeing the ways in which they are like you, not different from you. And experiencing the fact that which is essence in you, which is essence in me is, indeed, One. The understanding that there is no other. It is all ONE. I wasn’t born Richard Alpert, I was just born as a human being, and then I learned this whole business of who I am, whether I’m good or bad, achieving or not…All that’s learned along the way." - Richard Alpert
