We all love JRPG's, but the term itself covers a broad range of game types So what is your favourite sub-genre? Is it the strategy-rpg, action-rpg's, dungeon-crawlers, monster-hunter style games, or some mash-up of them all?

I personally am not well-versed in many of them, instead sticking to traditional turn-based Rpg's. I really enjoy games with a monster-raising focus though :)

Editing … Turn based is great, I love it, but Action has way more potential and is also much more envolving for the player. You don't just have to take your moves into account, you also have to think about positioning, timing, pacing, reflexes and skill. One thing is to prefer turn based, another one is saying it's "the only way to go" which is undermining Action's potential alot.

Editing … I really hate "action"-oriented RPG games. Tactics is what I consider most important in an RPG. Positioning, timing, pacing and reflexes are for pure action-adventures. Not for RPGs. At least not in my book. To each their own, I guess.

Editing … The main reason I'm not big on action-RPG's is that I love action games like God of War, Devil May Cry as well as a good deal of other hack and slash games. I feel like most of the action-rpgs I've played would have benefitted from going further towards pure action. They don't seem to have the strategy of other Rpg's or the fluidity of hack and slash, instead being some poor mixture of both. There are exceptions obviously

Editing … But JRPG's are not big on tactics...at all. You have Fire Emblem and FF Tactics for that, which are SRPG's. And I disagree with the notion of them benefitting by going full action, because the examples given are pretty tedious after awhile. God of War and Devil May Cry are awesome games, but in no way are they better than something like Kingdom Hearts or Dark Souls. I guess the perfect balance between both is FFXII, which had one of the greatest battle systems ever designed.

Editing … I liked both turn-based and action RPG's. Strategy RPG's I wish I kinda like, but more often than not I'm awful at them. ATB combat is my favorite, obviously, but I'm open to many types of combat in JRPG's: I actually like the combat in all recent main FF's, for example (though XV has me nervous: Not because it's action, but because I'm not convinced they did a good job of turning it into an action combat system I'll have fun with, based on the demos.)

Editing … Sure, they're both good on their own. But it's hard to argue that the classical turn based is more tactical than XII's, in which everything you do from moves to equipment, positioning, planning, timing and pacing all come into play in different ways during the battle. Seriously, XII is so underrated. Same goes for action RPG's, they just require the players' skill and mastering of the mechanics way more. Not trying to diss on CTB, but in most games, 90% of the time all you really need to do is spam your most powerful attacks and heal every once in awhile. There are exceptions, of course, but they're just that - exceptions, not the rule.

God of War is pretty great. I actually like FFXII, there's some strategy in setting up your gambits and fine tuning them as you play further. Let's be honest, if your health fell below 30% you'd heal anyway, so why not make that decision early?

Editing … I'll.admit that the gambit system is a cool idea if you are one of those people who likes to "win the battle before it has begun", which I know is the appeal of RPG's for some people. Having that perfect set up and fine-tuning your equipment until you can steamroll the biss. But I never play that way. I like variety and trying out different strategues on the fly. If I can beat the boss with a single combo I'll normally avoid it in favour of something else, or if I know that I could just beat the entire game by buffing my physical attacker everytime, I'll avoid doing that.

Editing … Damn, what's with the Kingdom Hearts hate? xD Anyway I do find DMC and GoW's combat way more tedious and repetitive than Kingdom Hearts. At least in Kingdom Hearts you have more stuff to be aware of, like equipment, abilities, what moves to do, when and how to do them, at what time...you know it's just way more organic than just mashing buttons and killing everything instantly. Of course I played them on Critical Mode, and while they do have their bullshit parts they're still really difficult and require skill and strategy. As for XII, the thing is though you can set gambits to "win before you even begun", but you don't have to do that. It's extremely rewarding to do it though, because the game only gives you the tools and nothing else so you're the one figuring these strategies out on your own. Once you get to the optional bosses it gets so fucking hard it's awesome.

Editing … Kingdom hearts is one of the most objectively bad games I've ever played. The only other game in the series I've played is the PSP one which is at least palatable but has deeply flawed systems. In fact it probably would've benefitted by not being an RPG at all.

Editing … Sure, there's many better games...not really an argument for saying it's crap though. There are many better games than Bravely Default, does that mean it's crap? Does neither well, ok, could you explain why? Just because it's not all that deep doesn't mean it's crap, simplicity can also work really well and that's the case with Kingdom Hearts since the focus is on it's combat rather than strategical preparation of abilities and equipment. Getting nobody interested is factually wrong, since Kingdom Hearts sells millions with every entry. Yes, Secret of Mana is a better game, but once again that does not qualify as an argument for saying Kingdom Hearts is crap.

Editing … Simplicity = crap? How the fuck does that make any sense? Secret of Mana better = Kingdom Hearts sucks? So a game needs to be deep to be good? And no, I said there are many better games in general, not hack and slashes. Kingdom Hearts' combat is among the best i've ever seen, it's fun, intuitive, fluid, has great control and also it's hidden level of challenge and strategy if you play on the difficult modes. There are better ones sure, like Secret of Mana, Ninja Gaiden, Souls and Bloodborne, but Kingdom Hearts II's combat is still one of the most fun and satisfying out there. I find games like Dynasty Warriors to be so mindnumbingly repetitive, and Devil May Cry so tedious because it takes forever to kill every enemy sometimes.
