So I just received my transparent red doorstop with Omega Ruby installed on it. Kinda cheap on Nintendo's part, but at least it's pre-installed and not included as a code, so you don't need internet to play it. Anyway, I picked it up because it was only 99 euros, and I still wanted the game as well as a Western 3DS so I can play Phoenix Wright in English.

The transparent red plastic looks great. Why don't they make systems like these anymore? Well, aside from this very deliberate throwback to the early 2000s. If I had the choice, all my gaming handhelds would be transparent.

When it comes to ergonomics though, I definitely prefer the original 3DS. My biggest gripe is with the shoulder buttons. The increased size feels great, but you have to hit them from the sides rather than the top. I imagine they did this because children would've had trouble hitting them without the other buttons being moved up as well, which would've made the system too bottom-heavy. But as an adult with long fingers, I can hit them just fine, and it feels awkward having to hit them from the sides.

I could just beat the game and return the system, but then, I'd *still* need a new Western 3DS at some point (at least until region-unlocking exploits don't require specific cartridges or loading games through YouTube or whatever). And it'd be nice being able to buy games at normal prices without the extra costs involved with importing. So I'll probably hold onto it and use it to play #Final Fantasy Explorers with Favslist when that releases.

@Rockshard PhD, did you ever get one of these?

Editing … Yea I wondered why the transparent thing stopped after GBA, I thought it's because Nintendo started going Apple-inspired in terms of design starting with the DS, that or maybe transparent just doesn't look right on clamshell devices. (seeing as GBA SP didn't have transparent either, and 2DS is not clamshell. Hmm, looks like I've figured out the reason!) Nowadays though I think I'd prefer non transparent since it lets me notice more easily if the system is dirty. Anyway, to answer your question, I never had a 2DS yet. "you have to hit them from the sides rather than the top." hmm, I may or may not like that if I ever get one.

Editing … I still don't get the 2DS. Ditching the 3D option I can get my head around because not everyone liked it but losing the clamshell just seems like a backwards design choice.

Editing … Clamshell has major drawbacks, you're forced to hold the system by the bottom half which is ergonomically anachronistic for a system with multiple rows of controls. (i.e. dpad and analog) On top of that you're adding screen wobble to the system. These concessions are made purely for portability, not for ergonomic or gameplay-minded factors.

Editing … That said Nintendo does seem to treat 2DS as a bastard child, it was never released in Japan and they have neglected to make a New 3DS version of the 2DS. Nintendo also announced no black friday deals for the 2DS, despite doing so for New 3DS and New 3DS XL.

Editing … Well, the whole point of the 2DS was to be a cheaper, more sturdy alternative for younger kids, and it must be doing pretty well, since all the big kids releases get bundled with it. Yo-Kai Watch, for example, is *only* getting bundled with the 2DS. There's also a drug retail chain here in the Netherlands that's begun selling pink systems bundled with a code for New Super Mario Bros. 2. Apparently 99 euros is cheap enough to put it in the impulse buy category. On the other hand, it could also be a sign that the system's getting fazed out.

An answer to my question from about a month ago.
Q: The new Zelda game is really pushing the 3D aspect of its presentation, so I wonder if a big part of its appeal will be diminished with the 2DS?
A: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds changed slightly because of 2DS.

Editing … But, doesn't it look a tad uncomfortable to hold? Especially after the longer period of play. But I agree, if I decided to buy a 3DS, I'd probably go with the 2DS. On a side note: the new Zelda game is really pushing the 3D aspect of its presentation, so I wonder if a big part of its appeal will be diminished with the 2DS.

Editing … It is probably vastly more comfortable than the 3DS models due to the wedge shape, and curved L/R surfaces, and the fact your grip is distributed across the whole system not just the bottom screen. On the other hand I don't like the tiny clicky 3DS/DSi style buttons/dpad. Plus it has the 3DS layout with the dpad below the slider. These are the 2 biggest issues imo facing the 2DS.. but those issues are shared with 3DS.

In my opinion the 2DS is a good idea. I always hated 3D and looking at stereoskopic 3D hurts my eyes, even when I do it only a few seconds. Plus the price is absolute killer, $130 is really cheap. I've said that I'll never purchase a 3DS but now I'm seriously considering getting this one. It really does look ugly though.

The mono sound is no problem for me because I always use headphones. By the way: this version uses the same power battery as the 3DS XL (1750 mAh).

All in all: Ugly handheld but it plays 3DS and DS games, which is great. In this version I don't need to pay extra for a gimmick I'll never use (3D).

Editing … I actually think it's a pretty good idea. Studies have shown that exposing kids under a certain age (like 10 I believe) to 3D visuals is not very good for their eye health or development. It's been one factor in me not getting a 3DS for the boys. That said, the 2DS can give them access to the Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon games they want on the platform at a highly discounted cost. Not the most revolutionary thing in the world, but a nice alternative.

Editing … I think the idea of releasing a non-3D 3DS for cheaper is fine, but the design is a bit odd. I mean, does it really cost that much more to add hinges? Or are kids so terrible that they're snapping them in half? Oh, and @Daniel Kayser, you can turn off 3D in the Parental Controls menu of any 3DS. If that isn't good enough, it shouldn't be too hard to open up the system and permanently disable the 3D.

Editing … It looks like a tablet for kids. And I find the "2DS" name irritating. I get that it's trying to highlight being a "2D version of the 3DS", but it's basically saying "two-dimensional Dual Screen Nintendo handheld" – and that's already what the original NDS is.

Editing … Actually, now that they're officially merging first-party libraries, Nintendo should create one single MASTER console that plays all games of *all* Nintendo consoles ever made. And it's not forcing you to rebuy everything – I'm talking about playing the original cartridges!
