So I just received my transparent red doorstop with Omega Ruby installed on it. Kinda cheap on Nintendo's part, but at least it's pre-installed and not included as a code, so you don't need internet to play it. Anyway, I picked it up because it was only 99 euros, and I still wanted the game as well as a Western 3DS so I can play Phoenix Wright in English.

The transparent red plastic looks great. Why don't they make systems like these anymore? Well, aside from this very deliberate throwback to the early 2000s. If I had the choice, all my gaming handhelds would be transparent.

When it comes to ergonomics though, I definitely prefer the original 3DS. My biggest gripe is with the shoulder buttons. The increased size feels great, but you have to hit them from the sides rather than the top. I imagine they did this because children would've had trouble hitting them without the other buttons being moved up as well, which would've made the system too bottom-heavy. But as an adult with long fingers, I can hit them just fine, and it feels awkward having to hit them from the sides.

I could just beat the game and return the system, but then, I'd *still* need a new Western 3DS at some point (at least until region-unlocking exploits don't require specific cartridges or loading games through YouTube or whatever). And it'd be nice being able to buy games at normal prices without the extra costs involved with importing. So I'll probably hold onto it and use it to play #Final Fantasy Explorers with Favslist when that releases.

@Rockshard PhD, did you ever get one of these?

Editing … Yea I wondered why the transparent thing stopped after GBA, I thought it's because Nintendo started going Apple-inspired in terms of design starting with the DS, that or maybe transparent just doesn't look right on clamshell devices. (seeing as GBA SP didn't have transparent either, and 2DS is not clamshell. Hmm, looks like I've figured out the reason!) Nowadays though I think I'd prefer non transparent since it lets me notice more easily if the system is dirty. Anyway, to answer your question, I never had a 2DS yet. "you have to hit them from the sides rather than the top." hmm, I may or may not like that if I ever get one.

Editing … I still don't get the 2DS. Ditching the 3D option I can get my head around because not everyone liked it but losing the clamshell just seems like a backwards design choice.

Editing … Clamshell has major drawbacks, you're forced to hold the system by the bottom half which is ergonomically anachronistic for a system with multiple rows of controls. (i.e. dpad and analog) On top of that you're adding screen wobble to the system. These concessions are made purely for portability, not for ergonomic or gameplay-minded factors.

Editing … That said Nintendo does seem to treat 2DS as a bastard child, it was never released in Japan and they have neglected to make a New 3DS version of the 2DS. Nintendo also announced no black friday deals for the 2DS, despite doing so for New 3DS and New 3DS XL.

Editing … Well, the whole point of the 2DS was to be a cheaper, more sturdy alternative for younger kids, and it must be doing pretty well, since all the big kids releases get bundled with it. Yo-Kai Watch, for example, is *only* getting bundled with the 2DS. There's also a drug retail chain here in the Netherlands that's begun selling pink systems bundled with a code for New Super Mario Bros. 2. Apparently 99 euros is cheap enough to put it in the impulse buy category. On the other hand, it could also be a sign that the system's getting fazed out.
