Does anybody speak Japanese around here? Some very friendly 74 year old Japanese tourist just gave this to me and I'm afraid those are drugs... Hehe

Editing … the top bit seems to say hitokuchi, which means mouthful, not sure about the other bit since it has kanji. Yep...I'm still not sure what it is, but I guess its edible.

Editing … He only spoke Japanese and a lil bit English, but I did grasp that there is some connection to... tea. I just don't know if you put it IN your tea, or eat it directly or make tea out of it or...

Editing … The top is mouthful, 茶の庵 means something like "Cabin tea". (Or like 'Retreat tea' with retreat being used in the sense of something like a mountain retreat.)

Editing … So it's tea? Should I simply put it in a cup and pour water over it, or filter it first with the help of a colander and then drink it?

Editing … He used a gesture that implied that you put it directly into your mouth and chew it. That's why I'm still a bit confused, though ;-P

Editing … A lot of japanese food is made of green tea. I suppose he gave you tea candies or something like that.

Editing … FYI, it doesn't feel like candy at all, more like a powder...or the stuff you make tea out fof, as I mentioned above.

I'd love to learn this someday to see all the cool stuff they have their that doesn't get localized, especially when it comes to games, and for if I ever get the chance to visit

Just a shame learning a new language is so hard

Editing … I've been learning Japanese super casually for the last month or so and three things I found really useful were #The Japanese Page, #TextFugu and #Anki. TJP has an awesome section for learning Hiragana and TextFugu is basically a guide to learning the entire thing. (It costs money but it has one of the longest free 'try me' sections i've ever seen.) Anki is a flashcard program that you use for a few minutes each day and before you know it you have memorised everything. (TextFugu provides the deck file for Anki.) My little brother is 10 years old and he is learning Japanese successfully in his spare time via the same way as me so I'm sure you could do it!

Editing … The best long-term motivation, though, is to find someone to actually speak Japanese with. I've learned this language for almost 1o years, mostly for the same reason (games and hentai pr0n), then I stopped and didn't speak, read or write it for more than 5 years. Now my skills are all rusty and I'm not even sure if I'll ever make use of this language again.

Editing … I've been learning it too for the past two months. I'm using lessons on internet and apps on the App Store (to study when I'm on the bus). I'm returning to university next month only to take japanese courses, I guess it will help me. I can't wait!
