The samurai were officially abolished as a caste in Japanese society during the Meiji Restoration in 1867
The first ever fax machine, the "printing telegraph", was invented in 1843
And Abraham Lincoln was famously assassinated at Ford's Theater in 1865
Which means that there was a 22 year window in which a samurai could have sent a fax to Abraham Lincoln.

    History is just mental.

My great grandparents were about the same age as Hitler. But I remember them from them when I was very young and they were very old. How can this be?! Quite easy really, but it just doesn't seem possible that I knew people born in the 1800s but I'm here still relatively young in the 2020s. Imagine everything that happened between the late 1800s and now. It's like, kinda mind blowing!

And when they were young the city I live in was 7 miles away from my current location. My great grandparents were born in a village called Sculcotes a couple of miles from Hull. Hull was a tiny little place by the river back them. By the time they were married Sculcoates had been absorbed into the growing city. We still use the term sculcotes for that area of the city though which I'm happy to declare. History should be preserved.

By the time my grandparents were born Hull was booming due to the fishing industry and spread out about 5 miles from it's original location. Where I grew up as a child was called Orchard Park and it was a housing estate. My grandad told me it used to be an actual real orchard back in the 30s when he was young and was still miles from Hull.

Then later Hull absorbed Hessle where I now live, about 7 miles from it's centre.

Even though I have all the facts I still can hardly believe this place went from horse and carts in a tiny place by the river to a massive urban spread. And all this technology within my great grandparents and myself. Not even just me, it happened in my parents and their grandparents time, my parents are still alive, so it's just 2 generations!

That's incredible! My parents will have memories of their great grandparents as I do, but they will be the generation of Hitlers parents!

Is anybody else just amazed by this? So much history has happened within easy reach of us, we can literally ask the people who were there, or who had close realtives who were.

Editing … Yeah, my great grandmum (born ~1880) left a village next to her birthplace Soest in late 19th century. For her husband moving to Borbeck a fast growing town in Ruhr industrial region, so it became a city for a short time before city of Essen annexed said one during WW1. Partly Borbeck belongs to Oberhausen now so i lived close (during learning new profession) to such recent metropolitan area which was so bright at night i had trouble to fall asleep. Hard to believe that place was just nonexistent until the 1850s!

Editing … I really have no idea. None of the old people told me about their lives. I just assumed they did not want to talk about it. All I know is my Dutch great granddad liked growing food but that he also did so out of necessity because they were poor mofo’s. My English side were all posh rich people so I doubt they ever had any hardships in the way of war. I think my Dutch Grandma and Granddad had to hide and duck for bombings. There was some story about that but I forget. I also have some idea of how they lived and poverty after the war. I have some old photographs of some family members in clogs and traditional clothing. That threw me off. Really cool photo though I don’t know who they were. The weirdest photos will always be of my dad though before his hippy phase. He was too handsome for how badly he groomed himself as a hippy so only in wedding pictures and in military pictures was he ever well kept. First when I saw those pictures I didn’t even know it was him. If the pics were not there I would never have believed it. He could have been a model which is strange because all of his brothers and sisters are almost under average looking with funny dutch faces.

Editing … People tell me I look a lot like my Dutch grandma and some people tell me I also look English. My face is a mixed bag I guess. :-P I always find it super interesting how people inherit traits from way back in the gene pool. Like how someone can have green eyes while there was only a great great grandmother with green eyes. It's like a part of the past being reborn.
