Leaving for the woods on Wednesday. Going to be in there all by my lonesome for 8 days and then I come out to meet up with my father for another 5 days elsewhere in the woods. Weather looks 50/50 on the rain almost every day. Gonna be a soggy trip but I'm looking forward to it, you just gotta roll with the punches. Hope I'm able to get in there alright, it's an 8 mile paddle and than a 3 mile hike with boat and gear. Been kind of dormant lately so could be a bit rough but I'll take my time and plod along. Can't wait to wake up in the morning and watch the otters playing about while the sun rises over the horizon and the fog lifts off the lake.

I did a full restore of my solo kevlar canoe and I'm pretty damn happy about the way it turned out. I was a bit worried going in cause it's a fairly fragile boat and it's probably the most important thing I own in terms of happiness. But it was due for a fix, the resin was pitting, there were some surface cracks and some gouges from heavy use. I was even getting a little worried taking it out. So I removed all the metal parts and then sanded the remaining resin down to the kevlar. Then covered the whole thing with a new coat of fiberglass resin and sanded and sanded and sanded until it was glass smooth. Then I reattached all the metal bits and repaired the plastic decks which were cracking and now it's a beast. There's something very rewarding about fixing something with your hands and now I feel confident if I have any problems with the boat down the road I'm not worried about it anymore because I know I can fix the boat. I know none of you video game loving folks care but here it is for that one canoeist that joins the site 5 years down the road.

Editing … I envy your motivation. I want to get back into cycling but need to do a bunch of bike repairs and keep coming up with excuses.

Been back in Jersey 14 days at this point. Been on the water only twice for a total of only like 4 hours.... that is not enough. Headed out in the morning to do a nice longer trip for 6-7 hours straight along the Lamington & Black Rivers, should be quite a good time.

Editing … Also sort of related... anytime I have a situation that I think something's going to happen and then it doesn't it reminds me of when Meehan in Band of Brothers says "The Channel coast is socked in with rain and fog. High winds on the drop zone. No jump tonight." It's one of those weird movie moments that just stuck with me because of the delivery of the line.

Really thinking about paddling the Northern Forest Canoe Trail this summer. Its a roughly 55 day 750 mile canoe journey from New York to Maine. I'd have to do some strength training over the next few months though. Get some upstream paddling and poling practice in and maybe do a couple 20 mile days on the canal. Not to mention some trail miles with weight to be prepared for the 75 miles worth of portage. But..... it honestly might be one of the last chances I get to do a trip of this size. Maybe, maybe.
