Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist, media critic and blogger. She is the author of the video blog "Feminist Frequency" and the video series Tropes vs. Women, which examine tropes in the depiction of women in popular culture, especially in film and TV. On June 4, 2012 Sarkeesian began bringing her criticism to video games, and started the Tropes vs. Women in Video Games series.

Saved!@femfreq I’ve lost count of how many times men have harassed me on social media by sending photos or videos of themselves ejaculating onto my image.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Exactly. She's totally asking for it. If she just stopped talking, misogyny would cease to exist pretty much immediately. In fact, I'm about to send her a dick pic myself, that'll show her. /s
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I already sent numerous, but I'll send another one so she learns that she's wrong.
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … I get why people find her annoying, I don't get why they keep paying attention to her anyway.
-
Saved!MasterCrashEditing … If I become a really annoying person in the internet will girls send me videos of them orgasming onto my picture?
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … possibly: http://burgerbumps.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/securedownload-12.jpg

Its also so cute when feminists and con artists who clearly don’t play video games and have said they dont play videos games
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afgtd8ZsXzI
try to talk about video games.-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … She said half a decade ago that she's not too keen on violent video games. Neither am I. Am I a con artist? "See guyz, she's not one of us! As an outsider she has no right to criticize our hobby!"
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … She does say "I'm not a fan of videogames, I had to actually learn a lot about videogames" in the video clip though. It's weird because I think I remember her talking about playing videogames as a child. Maybe she lost interest in games during her teens, and picked them back up again later as an adult.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … That's exactly what happened. She had some exposure to this hobby as a child, stopped as a teen (which is absolutely normal, average behaviour for female Teenagers of her generation), and then came back to playing games as an adult. Even now she's not into violent 'hardcore' games like COD or whatever, but prefers indie games that offer meaningful experiences (Gone Home, Journey etc) if her steam curator page is anything to go by. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

-
Saved!Gotta admit I found this pretty funny, less nasty than he usually which I prefer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6flKG51iWw&t=1m57s
It's a shame because I don't think her ideas lack merit, Anita just seems to pick bad examples.-
Saved!KalibooStewEditing … 1] Suggests that games aimed primarily at children cannot have mature/meaningful elements. 2] Claims that any violent sections in the game contradict the existence of non-violent ones. 3] Continually plays the same Anita clip over and over in the hope that it becomes annoying and the viewer subconsciously channels their annoyance at Anita directly.
-
Saved!KalibooStewEditing … I'm not overly fond of Anita or her methods, but this guy is full of shit.
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … Yeah his video editing is very aggressive, apart from being irritating it ruins credibility since he can alter the context of what was being said originally. Still, if you're spending half the time beating animals with a stick in the game... I'll watch her original video later today out of curiosity, I don't remember Beyond Good & Evil that well.
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … So I watched her video and the guy had actually cut out a portion of her footage to make it look like Jade was rescued entirely by uncle pig: Jade actually uses an item uncle pig gives her and the player has to rescue themselves. Her main point in the video is basically the genuine respect characters have for each other, not that Jade is a perfect character. She still didn't discuss the violence in the game though, but maybe she only sees glorified violence as an issue.

Saved!Anita Sarkeesian is disturbed by the violence in the new Doom, and offended that Dishonored 2 would also let us choose to play as a male: https://twitter.com/femfreq/status/610273457582944256 https://twitter.com/femfreq/status/610277027367661568
Have a laugh-
Saved!ErektionsiteEditing … It is literally impossible to tell if that Doom-comment is serious or not. So bad.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … she's got a point, though. this ultra violence is only enjoyable if it's done sarcastically (think Saint's Row). Games like Doom and Hatred et al are disturbing as fuck
-
Saved!GhosthackEditing … I've never known what to think of her honestly. I don't really keep up with what she does, don't really care either way. But she lost all credibility she may have ever had when she dissed Mad Max. Of course since I love violence in my media, we were never going to agree on anything anyway. Regardless, both these comments are ridiculous.

-
Saved!this slutty Canadian cunt just released another patriarchy destroying hate video that threatens our collective manly existence, go check it out! It's great
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … In case it wasn't obvious already, I'd just like to reiterate that I have nothing but the utmost respect for anita sarkeesian's work and nobody should have to put up with so much vitriol and harassment as she does. Can't wait for her next video in this mini-series. It was about time she focused on the games that have strong female protagonists, instead of critiquing the ones that don't all the time. I'm all for positive reinforcement.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … There's no such thing as a strong female protagonist, bitches are weak. They should get back in that kitchen and make me a sandwich. But really, she just writes this stuff so her work gets attention, she's quite clever. I bet she's sat at home now on a pile of money thinking "what REALLY annoys online geeks the most?"
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Nobody ever denied she's doing this for monetary reasons, but you can tell she's passionate about this subject. Would you trade getting $30-40000 a year for making a bunch of videos online for getting death and rape threats on a daily basis? I for one don't envy her current position and life situation at all, no matter what her motivations behind her actions are.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … These threats come from fat losers that only leave their parent's basement to pay the pizza guy, she's safe as houses.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … And that makes these threats less real, vile, concerning, upsetting and quite frankly frightening, becaaause ...?! I'm kind of unsatisfied with the fact that every discussion seems to about her personal life and not the merits of her work and what she actually has to say. She's a clever girl and many fail to realize that she should get adequately compensated for her work. It's disgusting that ad hominem attacks have such a prominent role in this whole affair; it bothers me greatly that apparently some people lose all common sense and decency whenever a woman has a strong opinion on something.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Meh, if I got upset everytime I was/felt threatened I'd never leave the house. I expect bar staff have it bad, and bus drivers take a lot of stick.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I just thought, how often do coppers get threatened? Like a hundred times a day at least. Shit money too.

Anita was on that Colbert show for a few minutes, she handled it pretty well. Damn though, Gamergate sounds so stupid from an outside perspective.-
Saved!AramondeEditing … I got 2:30 in and couldn't watch it anymore. Of course their didn't say shit about journalistic ethics and im sure Anita didn't bring it later. figures
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … I've started listening to an interview Totalbiscuit is doing with the Kotaku editor, and so far (30 minutes in) there is very little levelled against the media. There's the Quinn thing which revolves around 'allegations' and a game nobody will probably play; the Patreon thing which involved a $10 donation; and the mailing list which is imo the only genuinely concerning one.
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … Oh and they do mention the ethics in journalism thing but Colbert just makes fun of it. I know it will piss you off but I think you should try and watch the whole thing, at least to see another perspective.
-
Saved!Billy McKennaEditing … I certainly won't watch it any more than I'd watch Fox News pundits being pricks. They can keep their stupidity to themselves as far as I'm concerned. That the beauty of TV, you can turn it off/over when an ignorant prick decides to interview a lying manipulative shrew and not have to expose yourself to their dribble.
-
Saved!AramondeEditing … MC i've already heard their position many times before. At this point i'm starting to just not care anymore. If these social justice zealots dominate the gaming industry to will just crash and will just rebuild from there. I used to be afraid when people said theirs going to be a another crash sson but now i welcome it with open arms.
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … I can imagine some militant SJW butchering Bayonetta in a blog or something like that, but I really wonder if they are capable of industry wide change and collapse.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Nothing is gonna change, we real gamers that support the industry just don't give a fuck. Let people get on with trying to give their meaningless lives some reason to make themselves feel important, personally I don't need it, I'm satisfied with how my life is going.
-
Saved!Filly VanilliEditing … They didn't talk about it because it has never been about journalistic ethics. https://storify.com/EffNOVideoGames/stopgamergate-it-has-always-been-a-spin People really need to relax, tone it down with the reactionary "the-sky-is-falling" clamoring and realize that feminists talking about how developers could make games more inclusive and diverse is not going to cause the whole fucking industry to collapse. If anything, it's the #GamerGate goons who are going to cause the industry to collapse by literally driving creative minds out of the industry with their pathetic threats and causing a big stink in the name of hindering artistic growth. Not to mention turning our community into a laughing stock to any onlooker from outside the community with a shred of damn sense. Literally every artistic and entertainment medium has feminist critique to it. Gaming is not magically exempt from that, no matter how badly you want it to be. Ultimately #GamerGaters don't seem to understand that the "SJWs" they're whining about are gamers too, and we love this hobby as much as anyone. We can love something and want to see it succeed while still critiquing the things we see wrong with it. Shocker, I know! On topic: I wasn't really a fan of Anita's appearance on the show. It didn't really accomplish anything imo, and it's always cringeworthy to me when someone says "do you believe women deserve equal rights? Then you're a feminist" because it way oversimplifies feminism and discourages people from actively engaging more complex feminist concepts.
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … Yeah it wasn't exactly a profound interview, but I guess the format of the show limited her to short replies. I finished listening to the interview Totalbiscuit did with the Kotaku editor, and really there is no major evidence of corruption or anything to explain the outrage. The main point TB had was that the 'Gamers are dead' articles were intentionally incendiary. After reading three of them though I don't think they were. The Gamasutra one was probably the rantiest but also forgettable; the Dan Golding one was pretty tame and non-aggressive http://dangolding.tumblr.com/post/95985875943/the-end-of-gamers
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … There's a woman that does some articles on a football site I visit, I know it's her as soon as I read the title! She never does a match report or something basic, oh no, it's always massively in depth about some bad thing. I think she tries too hard to prove herself in a male dominated soccer world, if she just backed off a bit she'd easily be the equal anyway, her writing isn't bad it's just her direction. Anyway, that might not be relevant because I never read anything, I just thought I'd point out something I noticed that was kinda similar.
-
-
Saved! Some knobhead made a death threat to a Uni where Anita was gonna speak. If the person thought it would make her go away they have just achieved the exact opposite. If a woman needs an armed escort just to speak on feminist issues in gaming... that lends huge authority and credibility to the misogyny narrative.
http://www.businessinsider.com.au/anita-sarkeesian-death-threats-2014-10-
Saved!AramondeEditing … And yet they lump all gamers together with idiots like these. She loves it though, because she can keep milking this gaming controversy for all its worth.
-
Saved!Bob GutSmashaEditing … A lot of people are because of how she misrepresents games and our culture. There's footage of her saying she doesn't actually play games etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afgtd8ZsXzI So there's a certain amount of dishonesty surrounding her delivery. That doesn't mean she has no valid points, but it does fuel cynicism. She shouldn't receive death threats though, that just insults freedom of speech and validates her position.
-
Saved!AramondeEditing … Yeah she shouldn't receive death threats. But neither should anyone else who's famous. If you're a public figure you going to receive death threats. Newsflash their are crazy stupid assholes in the world.
-
Saved!AramondeEditing … *reads description under link* Ah come on Utah State! I would expect this from BYU but not from you! Well this confirms again the U of U is the best University in Utah.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Could it be that you're simply afraid of change? “GamerGate is not about ethics in game journalism so much as it is about losing control of our hobby.” - Brendan Sinclair, gamesindustry.biz
-
Saved!AramondeEditing … LOL coming from someone who's in games journalism industry. It's 1 am i need to be up in six hours im going to bed. But please Gries tell me what you think GamerGate is really about.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Why so evasive all of a sudden? Did my question make you feel uncomfortable? - "Tell me what you think GG is really about": Is this a trick question? It's about frustrated people, on both sides of the "debate". 'And that's all I have to say about that'.

Saved! The "Women as Background Decoration: Part 1" video is actually not that bad since I watched the full thing. Up to about 18:00 it's good, but then she stuffs up with the depiction of Hitman and some other games; on Hitman she says ""Players are meant to derive a perverse pleasure from desecrating the bodies of unsuspecting virtual female characters," which is just big poopers. Other than that it's pretty reasonable, she just ruined that part of her video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZPSrwedvsg
-
Saved! Finally 1.5 years later I found the time to watch some of the documentaries she made about the current state of the video game industry and although I'm super late to the party I have to say that it sickens me to see how much hate this woman gets for creating interesting, informative, professionally made entertainment on the Internet.

Saved!MasterCrashEditing … And 2015, 2016, 2017... we might as well just give you all the awards till the end of the world
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Watching part three now, she hasn't said a single thing yet that offended me in any way or that was straight up wrong. She merely presented very well researched facts in a non offensive way. I'm quite impressed actually how she constantly name drops totally obscure games I've never even heard of and talks about what she finds problematic about them in an enlightening manner.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … The moment you realise I'm actually serious about what I write sometimes ... priceless.
-
Saved!Filly VanilliEditing … Oh my gosh you guys, she even points out from the get-go the value of being able to like things and STILL CRITICIZE AND EVALUATE THEM and admit that they're problematic in some ways. After watching this video I don't understand why people got their panties all in a bunch. It's not saying anything bad about men, it's not attacking people who happen to like these games, it's just pointing out *tropes*--things that actually happen in an entertainment medium, and explaining their implications on women. Why is that so upsetting to some people? "Games don't exist in a vacuum." YES, THANK YOU. I'm embarrassed that some Dtoid editor dork's "rebuttal" of one of her videos was able to sway my opinion of said videos when I hadn't even actually seen them. Thanks for posting this Gries--I never really gave Sarkeesian's videos a chance because just the utterance of her name in online game communities became borderline triggering for me.
-
Saved!DoubleagentEditing … People are mad at her because she is frequently objectively incorrect / lies / misrepresents the content of videogames. You don't even need to get into subjective matters / her opinion to see why people don't like her. She also turns off all of her ratings and comments / censors discussion of her videos which reflects very poorly on her.
-
Saved!Filly VanilliEditing … Based on that video, I'm gonna say no, nothing objectively incorrect in there. Gries agrees based on two more videos. So... next excuse? Oh and uh, she probably turned off comments because people incessantly hurl rape and death threats at her. Just a thought.
-
Saved!Filly VanilliEditing … It's also interesting to me that people on the internet frequently think they are entitled to "debates" (or, as is more often the case, to arguments) just because the internet is known for being this bastion of free and unfettered speech. Mind you--that is the INTERNET in general, not individual people's pages. Sarkeesian doesn't owe anyone a conversation or a platform just because she put up a video. I do the same on my Facebook posts by deleting shitty, bigoted comments because those are /my/ domain and I don't owe anyone a platform in my space. You can post your opinions or counter-arguments on your own page if it floats your boat. I've learned that a crucial element of being a feminist is self-care, and for me, taking control of what content is published on my social media pages and posts is a part of that. It is good for my mental health. So I can absolutely understand why she would do that and could not care less if it upsets people that they have to go somewhere else to share their opinions. Going to disengage now since this is Gries's post, but I just felt the need to address that myth.
