Finally 1.5 years later I found the time to watch some of the documentaries she made about the current state of the video game industry and although I'm super late to the party I have to say that it sickens me to see how much hate this woman gets for creating interesting, informative, professionally made entertainment on the Internet.

Editing … Watching part three now, she hasn't said a single thing yet that offended me in any way or that was straight up wrong. She merely presented very well researched facts in a non offensive way. I'm quite impressed actually how she constantly name drops totally obscure games I've never even heard of and talks about what she finds problematic about them in an enlightening manner.

Editing … Oh my gosh you guys, she even points out from the get-go the value of being able to like things and STILL CRITICIZE AND EVALUATE THEM and admit that they're problematic in some ways. After watching this video I don't understand why people got their panties all in a bunch. It's not saying anything bad about men, it's not attacking people who happen to like these games, it's just pointing out *tropes*--things that actually happen in an entertainment medium, and explaining their implications on women. Why is that so upsetting to some people? "Games don't exist in a vacuum." YES, THANK YOU. I'm embarrassed that some Dtoid editor dork's "rebuttal" of one of her videos was able to sway my opinion of said videos when I hadn't even actually seen them. Thanks for posting this Gries--I never really gave Sarkeesian's videos a chance because just the utterance of her name in online game communities became borderline triggering for me.

Editing … People are mad at her because she is frequently objectively incorrect / lies / misrepresents the content of videogames. You don't even need to get into subjective matters / her opinion to see why people don't like her. She also turns off all of her ratings and comments / censors discussion of her videos which reflects very poorly on her.

Editing … It's also interesting to me that people on the internet frequently think they are entitled to "debates" (or, as is more often the case, to arguments) just because the internet is known for being this bastion of free and unfettered speech. Mind you--that is the INTERNET in general, not individual people's pages. Sarkeesian doesn't owe anyone a conversation or a platform just because she put up a video. I do the same on my Facebook posts by deleting shitty, bigoted comments because those are /my/ domain and I don't owe anyone a platform in my space. You can post your opinions or counter-arguments on your own page if it floats your boat. I've learned that a crucial element of being a feminist is self-care, and for me, taking control of what content is published on my social media pages and posts is a part of that. It is good for my mental health. So I can absolutely understand why she would do that and could not care less if it upsets people that they have to go somewhere else to share their opinions. Going to disengage now since this is Gries's post, but I just felt the need to address that myth.

Editing … The fact that she turns off all of her ratings and comments is objective fact. If you are presenting a "This is my opinion / this is how it is" piece and then don't allow people to dissent your opinion it lessens your argument. Saying that she gets death threats is a purely emotional stab at a logical issue. Here is her misrepresenting a game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuRSaLZidWI and again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbihPTgAql4 Early on she stole footage from other channels / did not actually play the game herself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvwiYmVhW94 You can go and look for more criticism if it is something you are actually interested in, it is not hard to find and I am not particularly invested in this discussion / having a repeat of the last two times.

Editing … @Louis, regarding the #Hitman: Absolution video you posted: As someone who played this game to completion only a few months ago, I have to say that while her depiction of the events in said level and the atrocious and misogoynistic crimes you can commit to the NPCs in the strip club may seem one sided to you, I actually did the same thing on several occasions throughout the game. Infact, while doing so I felt arousal/a sense of superiority/fun and guilt at the same time enjoying myself with the hilarious ragdoll effects this game features. Furthermore while it is indeed true that #Hitman: Absolution and pretty much every sandbox game (#Grand Theft Auto IV, #Sleeping Dogs) punish you for commiting crimes (just like Anita mentioned in the same video btw only a few minutes later!), her point is that while you as a player are discouraged to commit those crimes - e.g. by losing points in the case of Hitman - the penalties aren't enough. The #Assassin's Creed franchise handles this way better: if you kill more than three NPCs you get 'disconnected' from the Animus. That way the player gets conditioned that going on random killing sprees may seem fun to you, but have consequences and serious repercussions ingame.

Editing … Regarding incorrect info and misrepresentations in that video, I viewed half of it again (seen it and several video replies to it before) and took note of everything that stood out to me. Quoting and replying to everything takes up a ton of space though, so I'm posting it to a separate page. Oh and she doesn't see this as an 'opinion piece', she wants it to be used as educational material. http://626535750121256080.weebly.com/damsel-in-distress.html

Editing … Anita is a fraud that's a big reason why people hate her. In her videos she never opened up the comments like Filly said, then before her kickstarter she open the comments on her newest video knowing trolls and idiots would leave hateful comments. Used that to get a bunch of money for her kickstarter. Where she said she has been a gamer for years but their is video evidence of her saying shes not a gamer and doesn't want to play them. Then when her videos comes out she's using game footage from other let's playsers which why would she need to do that? Wasn't the KS money supposed to go to games for her to play? All Anita has done is con people into giving her a shit ton of money while cherry picking stuff out of context from games to support her bullshit. And has guilt trip the industry into giving her an award. But i have to give her some credit she pulled it nicely.

Editing … "Used that to get a bunch of money for her kickstarter." <-- Well if there were no hateful comments then there wouldn't be a problem. So we have nobody to blame but the trolls. "their is video evidence of her saying shes not a gamer and doesn't want to play them." <-- I think there is a bit of confirmation bias due to the fact she is a woman. A guy could have gotten away with saying what she did because then people would just think he's not mainstream. edit: Definitely, in fact, I remember once posting some DICE conference or whatnot where someone said that games should be about story and not mechanics. If he was a female he would be slaughtered but since not, people took him seriously.

Editing … The thunderfoot guy actually touches on just that in a video posted today (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixhr8mjy1fs), and draws parallels to jack thompson and glenn beck, people I'm not that familiar with not being american but at least he backs his claims up with some examples. I don't know, but I don't think a vast majority of gaming media backed those guys up or that anyone gave them awards. And 'narratologists' (or games of that cater to them: Gone Home, Dear Esther) definitely get backlash from people, but of course it's not as harsh when they don't block feedback and aren't saying that games they don't like probably turn people into sexists/racists/killers. They tend also to just be tired of the focus on violence in some specific game/series/genre instead of saying that they don't play games at all because all games are about shooting people in the face (which is what Sarkeesian said some time before TvsW).
