Saved!Persona 3 is clearly designed as a way to disturbed teens a pat on the back rather than help them figure out they're messed up and need help. It stars a teen boy with emo hair who shoots himself in the head over and over. Even ignoring that, the design is archaic, giving us turn based battles in 2006 (where you can't even control your teammates, leading to frustrating moments, as the AI is far from perfect). I'm actually stunned they didn't just go with random battles, a lazy, dated mechanic that should've been tossed in the rubbish 20 years ago. Persona 3 is part dating sim, the most sad and pathetic genre to ever exist, so that neckbeards with acne who can't get a date can feel a sense of self worth because they managed to have a decent conversation with a pretty girl by pressing X a few times. Visually, it's just the same old anime bullshit. Does the entire country of Japan have one fucking art style? And get this. The game has ONE dungeon, with ONE visual style, and ONE piece of music that hardly changes. I'm stunned that people managed to finish this, let alone that it's actually 47 on the ATF games list, ABOVE DEUS EX HUMAN REVOLUTION. My God, people.
1/10, when can we get a All Time Least Favorite games list?-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
-
Saved!Ed KickEditing … WRPG's > JRPG's
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Gries might have copied but I think he means it.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … I find WRPG's sooo boring.
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … Honestly, if I forced myself to play Persona I imagine my reaction would be pretty similar to this.
-
Saved!ErektionsiteEditing … Gries gonna Gries
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … But P3 > Mirror's Edge right?
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … Mirror's Edge > Any jRPG
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … My opinion > yours
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … Of everyone commenting I'd say my opinion of games > Ed Kick's opinion > Gries's opinion > Robert Berlin's opinion > your opinion > That Donkey Guy's opinion. Of course, that's just my opinion.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Forgetting all this > getting onto that subjective argument again
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … Subjectivity > Delusions of Objectivity
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … I will accept my opinion at the bottom, because of stuff like Digimon, not because of liking Persona 3, which is good. But I won't accept Gries's opinions over nodley's.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Didn't the dungeon change styles as you went up?
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Watching The Big Bang Theory > Posting on Gries status. Toodles!
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … Nothing personal Egg, we just don't have too much in common gaming wise. I don't know Nod, never liked The Big Bang Theory.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … "Didn't the dungeon change styles as you went up?" Yeah, but it stays fairly similar. I'd say the psychadelic one is the most different. It's enough variety for me obviously, as my favorite game.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … I never was all that crazy about Persona games. The JRPG "genre" isn't that close to my heart to be honest.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … Ish mah favorite. That and 3D platformers are the best. Nothing else compares for me.
-
Saved!Leo BarbosaEditing … How is turn based battles an archaic design?
-
Saved!Leo BarbosaEditing … But I agree that Japanese art style is a huge turn-off.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … We don't need a battle to be turn based to make a big game anymore. I mean, isn't that the argument for random battles being dated?
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … For me, depends on the Japanese art style. I wouldn't say I just love the anime look in general, and I don't like how similar a lot of anime can look to each other, but I do really like the way some anime stuff looks. Noein impressed the hell out of me when I was 13. Lain looks very atmospheric and Gunslinger Girl looks excellent. Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky have my favorite animation of any movie. Recettear looks very charming. And Persona 3 has a cool gothic look.
-
Saved!Leo BarbosaEditing … I think it's a fair design choice that works pretty well in a lot of games. Not every game need to be action oriented just because they can. It's like saying isometric projection is an archaic design. I love turned-based combat and isometric projection. Random battles on the other hand are pure laziness. A game like Chrono Trigger could have random battles without changing the mechanics, but it would gain nothing from that.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … To me Chrono Trigger gained nothing from not having random battles, but then I don't dislike random battles. I do dislike isometric projection, I find it very un-immersive.
-
Saved!free fallEditing … Turn based isn't dated, that's just what traditional RPGs are. Action RPGs are impure: deviations from the one true path. :)
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Tradition = Pure? I think I've heard republicans use that as an argument against gay marriage
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … wow I took that small claim to a much bigger level. But like, point taken, right?
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … I like turn based and I like action, I just don't like that in between stuff, like Baldur's Gate and FFXII. Feels too automatic, like I'm watching someone else play.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … There are examples of every gameplay style that I like. I think that thee is at least one game in any "major" genre that I really like
-
Saved!Ed KickEditing … I have yet to be intrigued by an JRPG, it seems like every main element of JRPG's another genre does better.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … I like turn based battles. There's a lack of franticness to them that I enjoy. I like feeling constantly aware of and in control of what's happening. And I've yet to play a game with a general design I like as much as Persona 3.
-
Saved!free fallEditing … Husky, don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are action RPGs. I don't have anything against them. Whatever goes on in their combat mechanics is none of my business. I just believe that an RPG is between a man and a menu screen and anything else simply goes against nature.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … Yeah, if we allow action RPGs, what will people do next? RPG with animals or kids?
-
Saved!free fallEditing … Seriously though I like action RPGs. It's just that I think of them as fun action games instead of fun RPGs, I dunno if that makes sense. :)
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … To me turn based combat seems like a quaint throwback to when hardware restrained gameplay more and so things had to be structured and semi-scripted if they were going to be complicated. I can appreciate it as retro but that's about it. The best action RPGs still have plenty of role playing elements, they've just got involving real time combat mechanics that make player skill more of a factor as well which for me makes combat way more enjoyable.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … Turn based strategy beats the living shit out of real time strategy, but real time RPG and turn based RPGs, well I guess I prefer real time.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I prefer turn based.
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … If I want turn based strategy I'll play chess, I don't feel like I need a videogame for it. In gaming where unlike a board game real time combat's totally possible having to take turns rather than have the speed of things governed by how quick I can think just feels like an arbitrary rule.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … The graphics are crap though
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … I don't know Nod, they're ultra realistic.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Pfffttt, even I could carve them out a bit of wood and I don't even have a software degree.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … Chess is good and it looks good, but I don't think about how much I like it compared to video games. To me a turn based RPG is more like an action RPG than like playing chess, just like Guitar Hero is more like playing any other video game to me than playing real guitar.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … There is a lot more to a strategy game than there is to chess though.
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … In terms of what's going on onscreen compared to in front of you on a chessboard and story and whatever else, sure. In terms of strategy mechanics I'm not sure many strategy games come close to chess when it comes to the variety of tactics when it's played at a high level. I just dabble and chess has already made me think more than Company of Heroes or Civilisation ever did.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … Chess is definitely more strategic, but there is more to a great strategy game than just playing it. Saying that chess is fulfills all your turn based strategy needs is like saying that driving to work fulfills all of my racing game needs or that playing football with my friends fulfills all of my Fifa needs.
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … I'd need a more interesting commute before the drive to work fulfilled any desire I had to race cars. Playing football with my friends does fulfil all my FIFA needs though, for me playing real football beats the hell out of playing virtual football. I get a lot more joy out of playing than I do from watching pro football as well.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Chess is for filthy casuals - not important, 2016
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … These are just bizarre comparisons. To me playing chess feels as much like hanging out with a bro and talking as it does playing a strategy game by myself. But that's a stupid sentence. There's no reason to compare this stuff.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … Everyone just misses my point, and that annoys me greatly.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … I'm full on agitated right now.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … You should become stupid like me. You can't be agitated from people missing your points if you don't have points in the first place.
-
Saved! Not ImportantEditing … There is more things to a lot of strategy games than there is to chess. That's not saying strategy games>>>dog poop>>>chess or anything, that's just a fact. They are hardly even comparable, they are so different. That's why I talked about the commute and playing football with your friends, they are totally different things, and they fulfill different needs.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … STRATGEY >>> DOG POOP >>> CHESS ARE YOU CRAZY HAVE YOU EVER EVEN PLAYED CHESS!!??!!??
-
Saved!Leo BarbosaEditing … I don't know much about chess, but comparing strategy games to chess feels wrong to me. I don't play strategy games just because of the strategy, there are a lot of other factors that I could never get out of chess (without imagining a lot). It reminds me of people complain about text-heavy games or Walking Simulators. Should Planescape: Torment be a book and Gone Home a movie? I don't think so. Yes, we have technology to have all games fully voiced, with ultra realistic graphics, real time combat, open world, cinematic camera, open ended mechanics and online, but should we?
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … I think I would've liked Planescape: Torment better as a book, but that's because I don't like the graphics and gameplay in it, not because I have a problem with text heavy games. I really like To the Moon, and that game's all story, but I like To the Moon's graphics, so I don't feel like it would've succeeded better as another medium, at least for me. Everyone has genres/mediums they like more than others, and times they would like a product better if it were a different genre/medium, but I guess the lesson is to be open minded to the idea that there's probably something within a genre/medium you're generally not a fan of that you like somewhere out there.
-
Saved!Ed KickEditing … As someone who doesn't like JRPG'S and generally finds them confusing ex. Secret Of Mana would the Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi games be worth playing.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Is that a question, ed? Yes, give the Mario and Luigi rpgs on 3ds a shot, they are very easy to get into
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … The major exception to me not liking jRPGs is Chrono Trigger, I'd recommend giving it a go.
-
Saved!Gries HeEditing … Seconded. Chrono trigger is like secret of mana for noobs
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … I can't imagine Chrono Trigger changing anyone's mind about JRPGs, but then I never got what was so great about the game. Paper Mario definitely feels like a JRPG for people who don't like JRPGs. Mario and Luigi has some good humor and does a lot of stuff normal JRPGs don't though, though I could never seriously get into them.
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … Might and Magic Clash of Heroes has a cool and very unique battle system. It doesn't play like any other JRPG I've seen.
-
Saved!Rich .Editing … Chrono Trigger didn't change my mind about jRPGs at all, it's just an exceptional one I really like despite not liking the genre. It's charmingly retro, the combat's fast paced for a turn based game, there are no random encounters, you don't have to grind and it doesn't have any pretensions, it's just a fun time travel story (with multiple endings).
-
Saved!Dr EggnogEditing … I didn't find the combat fast paced, I did have to grind, I didn't find the story fun, and I like pretensions. But hey, that's just, like, my opinion man.
