External storage is so cheap... only €220 for the 8TB version on #eBay. I have the feeling that it doesn't make sense to have internal hard drives these days. Just get a SSD for your operating system and an external hard drive with lots of storage and be done with it. I love how this external hard drive has an on/off switch.

Editing … I didn't know external storage was so cheap. I think you're onto something with your storage strategy, having just an SSD. This would be especially helpful for someone like me who doesn't trust cloud storage platforms but switches PCs often (the MicroSDs, they're so overloaded...)

Editing … That's actually a neat idea. But having a drive for your OS soinds kind of confusing since now you have data across two places and your comp will by default put everything on the internal drive.

Editing … speaking of which, my comp only has about 150 GB. so I don't need more than that for backup. Also waluigi gave me an idea. At the moment the external drive is just sitting next to the pc all the time and I plug it in whenever I decide to back up. Why not just leave it plugged in all the time?

Editing … "Why not just leave it plugged in all the time?" I don't think that's healthy for the external hard drive. That's what I find annoying with the one I currently have: I always have to make sure that it's not plugged in when switching my plugbar on or else it will run all the time since it doesn't have an on/off switch and I'm too scared to remove the plug while it's running (data loss could occur). "Mine is cheaper per gb." -> the bigger the storage the cheaper it becomes per GB ;)

Editing … but the internal drive is always plugged in is it not? I'm considering doing it. the drive was purchased much more recently than the comp and has been used only a few times, so I theorize that the comp should fail long before the drive will. Also: my mom said she's get a new comp, which if true then the drive only has to last until then. All bets are off. Also: if I get a second drive, then it's nice to have the first drive out of the way and only have to plug in when using the second one.

Editing … also here's a thought, all hard drives should be external. That way we can carry our data from pc to pc. But here's the thing according to you, it's not ok to leave external drive plugged in all the time but it's ok for an internal one. why? This defeats the idea in the first post "Just get a SSD for your operating system and an external hard drive with lots of storage and be done with it" so you plug it in only when you need it? wouldn't that be always?

Editing … Well, I'd be using the external drive for games and such, most likely. Also, should we just constantly like each other's comments, so we get notifications when someone replies?
