To anyone interested in history: I'd be very grateful if anyone of you guys could find out how old this hungarian sword is. It was a christmas present for my dad that I bought on a flea market.

Editing … I know pretty much nothing about swords. I'll bet there are a few sword websites that can help you though. If it turns out to be a long lost Hungarian kings famous sword that killed the last ever dragon and worth millions just remember who your best friend on favslist was.....

Editing … Mine is quite limited too. I recognice the correct flag of Hungary on it with their country name on (Magyar means Hungary did not see the M right now), which is odd to me. As it is barely rusted and obviously never used it can not that old either, my guess it is industrial production from late 19th to early 20th century at best. As hungary became independent (mean personalunion) in 1867, it looks like a symbol for nationalism combined with old traditions at that time. Older european swords would already fall apart and it is clearly no Ferrum Noricum (ancient).

Editing … It doesn't look like an officers ceremonial sword either, it looks like it could actually be used. But a sword for use wouldn't have that flag on it would it? Something to hang on the wall maybe?

Editing … Yes that sounds plausible, maybe it was a gift for long service for someone, who treated it not that well.

Editing … Yeah long service sounds like it could be right. My brother has a commando dagger on a plaque that he was given when he left the Royal Marines. I can see something like that sword given out around about the time before the great war for sure.

Editing … Oh, I just realised you foreign guys might not refer to it the same way we do. I think it was called the great war here in britain up until after WW2 finished and then people started calling it the first world war.

Editing … http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_infantry_weapons_of_World_War_I#Austro-Hungarian_Empire -> This page explicitly states that the Hungarians didn't use swords in WWI, so it has to be older than 1914.

Editing … Gries your sword is probably between 100 and 130 years old not more. The problem i have is the rust (it has only "Flugrost"/flash rust), an old one would almost consist of rust. age is not the mainreason for this, the quality of the steel is. As middle Age swords had really poor quality (iron not steel) the rusted almost immeadiately and broke frequently like glas (no kidding). Edit: I am tempted to think that it was made by a german as it looks like a german broadsword.
