A film that seems like unashamed propaganda at first ("Go and fight for the Maoists, they're good people") but beneath the surface actually turns out to be a scathing indictment of Mao's regime and the way in which the Cultural Revolution tore families to pieces. I guess the whole "Mao-is-good"-stuff that dominates the first half was the only way to get this film past the censors (who were after all quite busy in the 90s).
