Why are "Metroid" and "Metroid Prime" treated as two separate franchises?!

Editing … I understand the need to seperate a sub-series like for example "Dissidia" (fighting spinoff) from mainline "Final Fantasy" (RPGs) entries, but in the case of Metroid it just seems so arbitrary.

Editing … I don't think there's the need for that either, honestly. Just makes it confusing.

Editing … Well, one is a sub set of the other... its a little weird, maybe if you hate the 2D ones but love the Prime series? (which would make you a heathen)

Editing … Yeah, it's kinda weird. By this standard Super Mario Galaxy and World/Land should be their own franchise as well.

Editing … Nintendo should really have gone for Super Mario Solar System before Galaxy, now they only have Super Mario Universe left.

Editing … 1) same reason it's called Metroid Prime Pinball and not Metroid Pinball. 2) You are presuming a spinoff series is the only reason a series can be counted separate. Who says there can't be two "mainline" series in the same franchise? 3) Metroid Prime is NOT THE SAME AS OTHER METROID GAMES. Just stop it with your agenda! And Nintendo named it Metroid Prime for whatever reason, so that makes it a series, and they made a Metroid Prime Collection, and then they came out with Other M which isn't called a Prime game and hurr guess what it has different gameplay style. No wai!!

Editing … Metroid and Metroid Prime are both action-adventure games with platformer and shooter elements. No reason for them to be seperate, unless Prime isn't "canon" (but it is).

Editing … I get why things might be separated but it needs to be consistent in regards to other franchises. So either smack them all together or start dividing them up.
