You won't miss all that much story-wise, since it feels like a self-contained entry that doesn't really tie to the original. To me, it felt more like a spin-off. The second one probably had a deeper gameplay, but the first one had pretty much everything else better. That isn't to say the first one was shallow either. Far from it.
