Saved! My bank account got frozen a few days ago, apparently they need documents proving i exist.
"Federal law requires verification of the information on your customer profile."
https://www.reddit.com/r/CapitalOne_/comments/1ft3sdq/your_funds_are_currently_not_available_for/
The email has a link to a form, which I used to upload photos of my birth certificate, passport photo, social security card, wellcare card and "New York State benefit idendification card." This morning I get an email stating that was not good enough.
"Thanks for sending your information to help us verify your identity. Unfortunately, your documents couldn’t be used because they ."
That's it. The sentence abruptly ends like that. Then next line reads "To resolve this issue," and it just repeats everything from the previous emails.-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Absurd. Guess you'll have to call or visit in-person. It's much harder to be this absurd in-person.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Lol how can they freeze your bank account? Didn't you need ID to open it? Something fishy is going on.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I was considering going in person but then I thought that wouldn't achieve anything? They would just tell me to follow the instructions in the email. But now that smart husky suggested going in person I want to do it more.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I wonder if this was a phishing scam and I fell for it. But it doesn't explain why I am unable to use my account and why logging in to the Capital One app gives the message telling me that ID is required.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … edit: nvm
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Oh and btw. I was able to use paypal yesterday. Not sure what the explanation is. (P.S. This purchase is how I found out I've been blocked. My bank account payment method kept being rejected, but when I switched the payment method to paypal it worked instantly.) It would suck if the only reason it worked is bc I had unclaimed funds in paypal and it was drawing from that.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Sure enough I do have unclaimed money in paypal, 185.00 to be exact. But this means my purchase did not draw from it. WEIRD. It would absolutely rule if paypal serves as a loophole and allows me to in effect continue using my bank account. (At least until they close my account entirely or until it gets sorted out)
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Trump tryna force the Polish immigrants to go home :D
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I wondered if Trump had something to do with it. Maybe it's an ICE thing. Who knows right? But I never had this problem before. Another theory I had was Capital One simply doesn't want me as a customer anymore. (It's not as though I am making them any money, right?) Judging by that Reddit page I linked to, it may be a common practice of theirs.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Question, should I call first or go in person first? I have a fear that doing either will squander my ability to do the other. (E.g. if i call first then go there, they will find out that I called and will simply repeat that they told me over the phone)
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I found it ominous that the creator of the reddit page ended up moving his money to another bank rather than resolving the issue. I need to look over the thread and find out how many users actually solved the problem. So far it is NOT looking good for me.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … From the app, it just says my funds are currently not available for withdrawal, and that I should call *redacted*. Nowhere is the email mentioned. So I wonder if the email may in fact have been a phishing scam. (Also, fun fact, the phone number in the app is not hotlinked. You can't copy/paste it either. It HAS to be enfered manually.) Their help web page says call us at 1-877-383-4802. Which number to call...
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … One reddit user says the bank calks him once a year and he has to answer or call back in order to keep his account open. So hopefully that's all I have to do.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I googled and it's common with capital one, they also just git sued for withholding $2billion. If I were you I'd change to a better bank.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … See I'm worried bc what if I call and they just say "no." Also, what's sad is that now I *want* it to be a phishing scam. I'm more worried about capital one taking away accesss to my money than I am about a random person having my personal information. What if I call and they go "we saw your email, you didn't provide enough ID." (The funny thing though about being asked to call.. how am I supposed to show them my ID over the phone?)
-
Saved!LizardTaroEditing … Man, that crap reminds me of me with my web.de mail account debacle, where the just decided to block access to it and I had to sent my ID to them, and they STILL wouldn't unlock it. Scary stuff these days that they can just take away access to important stuff and you can't even do anything as a customer. Disgusting.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Seriously. I got deposits right after this happened. It's literally my money. They shouldn't have a right to block me from it. But here we are..
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Maybe it's an AI countermeasure https://fortune.com/2025/07/31/sam-altman-warning-ai-fraud-already-here-cybersecurity-lexisnexis-commentary/ edit: fawk, it's members only. I was able to read it the first time. Basically it's saying that photos of documents are already being AI generated as well as deepfake voices. Maybe the emails I got were an elaborate scam made possible using AI. EDIT: MAYBE I should not have posted the phone number here where spambots could potentially see it?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I called. They told me to check the email and upload photos of my ID. They'll look at it and reply within 3 business days. I explained I already did that. But they tell me to do it again anyway. So I did that and hung up. Shit sucks.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … According to google it takes 2 weeks to receive a photo ID, but you get handed a temporary one the moment you apply. Maybe I'll go this week.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Going to them in person does let you verify if it's a phishing scam. It shouldn't interfere from potentially benefitting from calling some other time too.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … But I think I already ruled that out? I called the number that shows up in the Capital One app. Then the person over the phone tells me to follow the email. It is, unfortunately for me, 100% authentic. The game is rigged.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Since you followed the email's instructions, try going in-person. If one of your parents is good at handling support, they could come with you, might be able to put some pressure on them to fix the issue.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … If the issue is general incompetence on their part at handling my request, or some kind of error, then maybe you have excellent advice and doing that would work. If the issue is my ID doesn't meet federal requirements, than maybe they feel legally cannot unban me and pressuring them might not work.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … What may be worth noting is that in the email the list of accepted documents is really long. So it would be curious if a standard photo driver ID truly was required because the length of the list suggests that *any* piece of ID should work. But you guys tell me. "To verify your legal name, please provide one of the following: U.S. government-issued identification, U.S. driver’s license or learner’s permit, U.S. passport, State-issued non-driver ID card, Resident alien or permanent resident alien card, Certificate of Naturalization, Tribal ID from a federally recognized tribe, Non-U.S. passport, Non-U.S. card for resident alien, Laser visa card (Mexico only—also known as a B1/B2 Border Crossing Card), U.S. B1/B2 visa."
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Makes me wish I belonged to a tribe.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Move back to Poland, you'll live a much better life. Banks won't steal your money, and Germany will pay for all your roads.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I honestly fail to conceptualize how it would make a big difference to be in one western country as opposed to another. Even if moving elsewhere would improve my quality of life (out of the city for instance, or to a more comfortable house/apartment) it would be easier to just move a different state, or hell it can even be the same state.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Maybe in the US. But in Europe we all have different cultures. Just 20 miles away I'm eating snails and wearing a beret instead of eating Yorkshire puddings and wearing a flat cap. And just an hour or so further I could be in Holland taking drugs legally or in Germany doing 250mph legally on the Autobahn. Europe is a really cool place.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … From everything you describe, I imagine you've done everything right. I do think you ought to go in and get answers, or perhaps in-person they'll just go "weird they'd reject this. Let me help you out." Or, maybe more annoyingly, they'll explain how there's an issue they totally failed to communicate before.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … "You've done everything right" Not if I didn't provide the correct ID. But I wish they would least have said that, instead of simply rejecting my attempt. They actually start to give a reason but never finish, the email literally reads: "Thanks for sending your information to help us verify your identity. Unfortunately, your documents couldn’t be used because they ." Yes, that is literally a space followed by a period. Get your shit together Capital One.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … What's also interesting is that over the phone they said they will review in 3 business days, but I got the email 9:09 AM the same morning I uploaded the photos the first time. If it was rejected that quickly, maybe it was automated or something and they didn't actually look at it. Which is a good sign I guess?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Oh, I have a theory as to what happened. The fact is I submitted four separate times, five documents total. Maybe the rejection message was for one of the submissions, meaning the other three are still on the table and there was never any reason to call!! Shit, that's a good theory. It also explains why the rejection came so quick, because maybe an employee saw the one that had my wellcare card and nothing else and was like "uhh no".
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … I bet you're trying to think up reasons not to go outside.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I was gonna say. Because nod be like, europe is great only 20 miles away is so and so. Son... I almost never leave the house and when I need something the store is a couple blocks away. 20 miles in any direction might as well be on another planet.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … You live in fucking New York the worlds greatest city and you don't go see it. I find that weird. I pay good money to see things. Here's me at The Great Mosque of Kairouan in Tunisia. Tunisia is in North Africa for you Yanks out there :P https://photos.app.goo.gl/dfKSp6UHLE4Xu9Sp6 No, I'm not religious but I like to see all the famous shit
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … wowow I can't believe you thought you had to tell us where Tunisia is
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Well you're American, it usually needs explaining.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … I can place nearly every country on a map!
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Where's Moldova? No googling
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Like, with words? North of Greece, not bordering Greece. I know it mostly by shape and size. I can get each country with 1-3 errors per continent (I test myself occasionally, on a good day I'll just have one error per continent, but I'm not good at the smaller island countries in the Pacific or Caribbean). If I go a while without testing myself, the smaller countries in west Africa are usually the ones I'll mix up most.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Andorra
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Lesotho
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Wakanda
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I've been to 20 countries I think, I might have missed one, in Europe and Africa. I really want to see New York more than anything else, but I have Portugal and Cyprus on my holiday list, we're doing one or the other next holiday we book so there's another new one. I can get 2 weeks all inclusive for a family for less than half the cost of 3 days just hotel in New York
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … They still haven't responded. Also I found out my instacart purchases have been drawing money from my paypal balance and I'm about to run out soon. I'm fucked.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … They said three business days and today is the third day.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Go in!
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Of course they didn't respond. They never intended to respond. They had me waiting three days like a fucking idiot.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … btw, something I thought was interesting. "Now that you’re a legal adult, federal law requires verification of the information on your customer profile." I had been a legal adult for a while ya think? I think they are screwing with me. It has nothing to do with federal law, they want to do this. Also, it goes on to say if I fail to verify they will eventually close my account and mail me a check with the balance. So my money doesn't just disappear, at least. I wonder if this is their end game. They don't want me as a customer. They'll give me the boot and send the check.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Oh, and maybe the initial rejection email was not a fluke. It's starting to look like it was the real deal. Maybe the reason I haven't heard back is bc I already received a rejection email and they saw no need to send another one seeing as I was sending them the same documents that got rejected.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Going in-person will be a healthy experience.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Can I say something. I received a letter from them. Like a literal letter in the mail. It arrives only after my account is restricted. What the fuck. It's like they're setting me up to fail.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I rang the hospital up yesterday and said I need an appointment it's been nearly 2 years on the waiting list. They rang me back 30 minutes later and said you're booked in on 17th next month. Sometimes you just gotta do shit to get shit done.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I may go to renew my photo ID and use that to open an account at a bank other than Capital One. But it says online it takes two weeks to receive the ID in the mail. I am given a temporary one that day. I wonder if the temporary one can be used to open a bank account. EDIT: I might as well get the photo ID, my mom has been wanting me to do that for a while and getting one might solve all sorts of problems. It might even have prevented this. I don't KNOW that it would, though. That's what gets me. I wish they would straight up say so. But instead they say literally nothing. I guess I should be appreciative I got a rejection email at all. (even though the sentence cuts off before the reason for being rejected is stated) It's literally the ONLY form of feedback I've gotten throughout this entire process. The sole instance where they acknowledge my efforts in any capacity. Holy shit these people are assholes.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I called them again. They say one of the documents I uploaded was expired. They won't give me a date on how much time I have before my account gets closed permanently. They say if I apply for a photo ID, the interim ID *will* work. (Oh! Interesting) My nephew is offering to take me to the DMV on tuesday. I just hope they will give me one. Who's to say they won't also be hardass about this. "You have no valid ID so we can't verify you exist and thus you can't get a new ID"
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Out of all that, this is the bit I picked up on: "My nephew is offering to take me to the DMV". Your nephew has to take you to a place? Is your nephew older than you? Are you under 18?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I was considering going myself, but if he takes us that will be convenient. Saves me the trouble of buying subway fare. (How if I have no money??)
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … You have hundreds in paypal?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I can't pay for subway with paypal credit.
