This is so cute, my brother texted me a photo of his son using the PSP. Totally unexpected for me, this is the first time my brother mentioned the psp at all since I gave it to him a couple years back. (And his kid was way too young at the time) Supposedly the kid likes to watch the intro to Last Raven over and over which I guess means he doesn't quite know how to actually play any games yet? Maybe i should move forward with giving him my oled vita. Oh, I should find my DS Lite with Sonic Advance!

Editing … Omg, he might like Need for Speed most wanted? He wouldnt know how to enter races but just being able to drive around in a car wherever he wants would blow his mind. Though in practice he'd get run down by the police a lot. Hopefully that doesn't spook him, lol.

Editing … PSP and Vita not really built for little kids, tbf. I mean, Vita is bulletproof, but games wise.. (there are emulators but that still requires you know how to navigate them)

Editing … That's really cute. I don't know how old he is but playing video games independently from an adult can be very difficult for children I have seen. Especially 3D games. My nephew can play on his own now but I had to thoroughly instruct him multiple times and despite all that he is still scared to fight monsters on his own. He's just turned 8. before the age of 6 he was not really able to play breath of the wild although he really wanted to. It was just too difficult for him. I was the same at that age. I can still remember having to look at the buttons while forgetting what they did. I think we take it for granted as adults but learning to play video games is really a special skill.

Editing … Yeap turns out he cant play them. He just likes holding them lol. My bro thinks the only game that might possibly work is one that simply involves pressing X to continue.

Editing … I realized there is a giant untapped market for young kids in games. I know when I was 3 I played duck hunt. I loved it and it was easy enough to understand. games like that could work. It would be cool to see if you could make a compelling game that could also be played by a young child because often they really want to participate but they don't know how.

Editing … Okay sooo I've been deliberating what system to give him, and booted up my New 3DS XL but found it has nothing really for him to do unless I hack it. (Which I might do.. but I have never hacked one before) I also realized a potential problem with the DS Lite that hasn't really occurred to me before, the volume controls are a SLIDER meaning you can easily power on the DS at max volume without realizing, as the slider position would have changed last time it was in your pocket or bag or wherever you keep it. An experienced gamer would check the slider position as a habit but a young child wouldn't necessarily remember to do that.

Editing … Yeah okay.. I see now oled Vita is the best candidate. I'll just throw King Oddball and Need for Speed on there, that is good enough I think. Things like emulators can be put off until later or I'll let my brother deal with that. EDIT: the charging cable really sucks though? Well I guess it depends if he's allowed to even plug it in by himself which maybe he's not, and his dad does it for him. In which case it doesn't matter I guess. Hmm.

Editing … I could give the slim vita with just a NFS cart. The only problem with that is that it's a slim model. Gross. I could hack it and add Sonic games which probably look fine when yellowed but then I'd have to hack it. And there's still the issue of having to jump through an emulator menu to play them.

Editing … Klem- 3DS is perfect the only issue is.. hack it and do what? I can scarcely think of any games he might want to play. The 3DS is pretty sweet thoigh, it's a galaxy purple New 3DS which would blow his pretty little mind. It folds open and close! Holy shit!! Here's a hot take, what I just fill it with cartoons or something instead. If that's possible. Actually. That wouldn't even require hacking but it would require i learn where to download shows. Maybe I'd simply rip yt videos and throw them in. But I could spend ages deciding on which shows to include.

Editing … I think a kid would enjoy games like Scribblenauts or drawn to life, Pilot wings, Mario kart, Kirby, Nintendogs. Also the AR games with the cards are pretty fun for short bursts. Or games that make good use of the 3d effect.

Editing … Was thinking it over some more. A few realizations. 1) I can still give him the 3DS eventually when he's old enough to play normal games. 2) If I hack it, I think it would be primarily for Mario All Stars + World. 3) As for Vita. The yucky thing about the vita is that I factory reset mine precisely because I don't want to deal with it anymore. If i decide to give it to him I have to get involved with it again and start installing stuff. I'm no longer the one playing on it but I end up doing 100% of the unenjoyable stuff. 4) I want to give him a good game but also worried about it being TOO good. And he becomes a screen kid and refuses to play with any toys anymore. It will be my fault. This puts me in a weird place. Where was I even going with this? Maybe I should call the whole thing off? 5) Need for Speed (or alternately Test Drive Unlimited) is great because he can just drive around. I can even turn the music off. It's less creepy or annoying than a lot of other options. King oddball is cute, but runs the risk where he's glued to the game repeating the same stage over and over trying to beat it, to the point where his mom will hate the game (and me as well) and get ptsd from hearing the music. 6) Test Drive Unlimited for PSP is a very compelling reason to stick to PSP and ignore the Vita altogether. It might actually be straight up a better choice than Need for Speed simply for the fact that the cops in TDU are extremely lax whereas in NFS they can be quite oppressive, and I can only imagine how much worse it is if you're a 4yo who can barely drive.

Editing … most kids become screen kids eventually because smartphones, but it's nice you are thinking about it but it's also not up to you if he becomes one. His parents are responsible for regulating his screen time. Also if his parents hate the sound of the game they can turn it off. They are adults. You don't have to think for them. You can think up potential negative consequences for any gift but that's not workable. You just give the gift and then it's up to them what they do with it. It's nice. Even if someone hates a gift they at least know you cared enough and had good intentions.

Editing … Mario kart 7 is a really good suggestion btw. How did i not think of that. Just goes to show how tuned out I am from Mario Kart at this point. But then again, it is kind of a brain rot game when I think about it. It's just to look at the pretty colors whizzing by and throw shells at opponents. I'd almost rather the game didn't have a win states because it would give him the impression that he accomplished something. EDIT: Ridge Racer 3D might be better, actually.

Editing … It's unfair to call it brain-rot on par with skibidy toilet/Coco Mellon. Maybe the new one is a bit more dumb since it has automatic steering, but Mario Kart DS is legit fun to master. One of my favorite Mario Karts.

Editing … It's one thing if you engage w the mechanics like drifting. But young children wouldn't know how, when they play Mario Kart they're more or less button mashing. (Not literally but figuratively) P.S. I was rummaging through my things and found a pink DS Lite with a non working touchscreen. Forgot I had that. There's also a thing about volume sliders I forgot to mention before. You need good dexterity to get the volume the exact level you want. Which in 99% of cases is "as low as it can possibly go without being mute" And even when you do, it's too loud. (I was wondering how this didn't single handedly kill the Game Boy, but then I remembered that the volume was a scroll wheel which is much more precise than a slider. Not to mention way cooler. I heard phone manufacturers are bringing scroll wheels back so there you go.) Anyway, I was considering taping over the speaker holes on the pink DS Lite to muffle the volume. That or seal the volume slider so it's permanently mute, bc does he really need sound anyway. (It'd be not really different from those old Tiger electronics games, minus the beeps) That still leaves one problem however. The system does not auto boot GBA games. And since the touchscreen is non functioning you can't press on the screen to start the GBA game, you have to manually move up/down to select it then press A. That's a lot for his little hands to remember for something so menial. It also doesn't help that the title of the game is not displayed. There's no eye-catching GBA graphic either, in effect it's just plain text that reads "start gba game." If one doesn't know how to read, it looks more or less like the rest of the home menu, and it's placed at the bottom of the list options.
