Users almost always raise their max bid, so it's best to snipe an auction to minimize the price. You can actually check the bid history of each item, with automatic bids filtered out, and you'll often see a long list of repeat bid increases from just a handful of users. Sometimes more than half the bids were placed by a single user.

If I really want an item, I snipe. I don't add the item to my watchlist, so other users won't anticipate my competition. But sometimes I don't want to put in that effort, or maybe I don't expect any other serious bidders, so I just place my max bid and move on.

But then someone outbids me. I reconsider, and yeah, I'll raise my max bid, but if they outbid me again? I'm gonna play a game. I'm gonna keep raising my max bid so it's the smallest possible increment above their current max bid. If the current bid is $100 I'll bid $103, $106, $109, and keep increasing my bid by the smallest increments ebay allows until I discover their max bid, and I'll sit right above that bid and wait for them to raise their max bid again. I know they'll raise it again, after all, the current winning bid is only a couple bucks above what they were previously willing to pay. I force them to overpay for the item out of spite.

    It's a dangerous game.

Editing … I thought everybody did that and then the snipers snipe each other until the best sniper remains standing. That's why I only do buy it now things. My heart can't take the stress of incremental micro bids.

Editing … I wait to snipe during the last 10 seconds, so I at least won't be able to second guess my max bid and try bidding more. Sometimes I've been outsniped even when I thought I was sniping something that didn't have a lot of eyes on it. Manga.

Editing … You use sniper bots or something or do you literally wait and place the bid yourself?

Editing … I wait and do it myself. I tend to set an alert outside of the ebay app, since I don't want the listing to get promoted because I've given it too much engagement. Give it minimal attention. Mostly I get buy-it-nows though.

Editing … I gave up on ebay years ago. I tried to buy a car but the bid kept going up. I put in an offer just short of a big number, like 2980 or something, because I knew they were expecting my offer to be 3k so they bid 2990. I quit there and then, I knew they were bumping the price up themselves. The next day I got a message saying the buyer had withdrawn and I could have it for my offered bid lmao! Nope, buy your own car and pay the taxes on it you scamming cunt. I will never ever use ebay.
