Editing … I think he had to do what he did. With Ukraine finding all that gas and Russia's economy relying so heavily on providing gas to Europe the future of their economy was looking extremely poor. Obviously you can't just go around invading countries anymore, but I can understand the reasons why he chose to.

Editing … It's the reason Rissia annexed Crimea a few years back, in doing so they took control of most of the shoreline where the gas is. But I heard Ukraine cut off the river and people living there now have no water and Russia has to send it in at massive cost. There's a lot of reasons but Ukraine joining nato isn't one, it's just an excuse to grab the money. Or that's my take on it anyway, it makes the most sense. Always follow the money if you want the truth. Thats also the reason the rest of the world hasn't sent in troops. Wars now will be mostly fought with money, with sanctions, ways to hurt their economy, cutting off imports etc. My stepmother is Russian btw, her family all live in Moscow.

Editing … speaking of which I thought it was kinda dumb (in retrospect obviously) when the Ukranian president was wagging the finger at the US, telling them not to play up the possibility of invasion as doing so incites panic, which impacts their economy. But then Russia actually invaded. (facepalm) He essentially encouraged his own people to be less prepared for what was to come, while trying to make the US look bad.

Editing … Is that what he did? I didn't see any of that, all i saw was Ukrainian celebs telling us Russia was going to invade on the news/social media. It was probably some political game. I hate politics, it's more a game to most. They want to do something so much that doing whatever it is becomes more important than doing the best thing. Then throw money in to influence them and it's just a waste of my time. Although I have recently got a little involved with 2 local MPs in my area who really do seem to be trying to make a difference here, but any MPs higher up the chain I trust as far as I can throw them.

Editing … Nuclear power plant was attacked, almost causing another Chernobyl incident. Jail terms for calling this an "invasion" or "war". This guy is such a loser. He seems to think he can take Ukraine simply because he wants to, and he's hellbent on getting his way. Then again, it's not like there is any way to really backpedal from this, is there? "Looks like we're not getting Ukraine. Better pull back our forces I guess. Sorry about all that." Ukraine claims they are not going to hand over any part of it. This REALLY could not end well. I'm genuinely worried.

Editing … I had no idea until after the invasion that Europe was getting like half of their oil and gas from Russia. All of Europe is partially responsible for giving Russia this much leverage. Will they stop buying Russia's gas after this? Wouldn't this ludicrously increase gas prices and plummet their economy? This is all really, really bad.

And this might be the best case scenario at this point- a repeat of Crimea and Georgia, so we can go back to our lives afterwards just like we did before. Good god, this is fucked up.

Editing … On TV there was interview with a.. former Ukranian president? Who was poisoned? He said Russia at war not with Ukraine but the rest of the world. And that Ukraine was essentially fighting on behalf of the rest of the world. (On that note, I hear that the current Ukraine president is saying that "if we fall, you all fall". Which to me sounds rather ominous, even coming from the good guy.) He said something else too. He said Russia is not likely to use nuclear weapons. That Putin is becoming increasingly isolated and there would not be two officers willing to turn the keys. That so? I'm still wondering why he haven't heard of any Russian soldiers who couped/defected/deserted. They must know how ridiculous this war seems? If he can muster that many Russian soldiers willing to throw down their lives for this, certainly he has two people who can turn a key?

Editing … I was looking at this the wrong way. It's not like Putin was staring at a map and weighing the pros and cons of invading Ukraine. It's not for money or oil and maybe not about security either. It's a passion project. He just wants to reunite the soviet territories. And he was willing make a really bad decision or two to achieve this because he apparently felt it would be worth it decades from now when history will recognize him as the one who pulled it off for better or worse. So all along he was an idealist. But he probably didn't imagine Ukraine would put up this much resistance. Right now he may be wondering if his invasion will even succeed, lol.
