Her most powerful role as a deaf-mute schoolgirl in Alejandro Inarritu's Babel landed her first Academy Award nomination, the fifth in Academy Award history for an actress who doesn't even speak. She also starred as one of the main voice actors in Mamoru Oshii's alternative history anime film, The Sky Crawlers. She's probably best known for her role as a Japanese Jaeger pilot in Pacific Rim, but she's renowned as one of the most ambitious actresses from Japan.
