Nothing in gaming will ever blow my mind quite like the introduction of the PS1 and the advent of mainstream 3D gaming. Graphical upgrades and open-worlds are cool and all, but to literally add an entire dimension to gaming was an absolute feat. I spent hours mesmerised by the tech demos on the "Demo one" disc. It took a while to get used to moving in three dimensions, and even longer for me to get used to analog sticks when they were introduced a little later.

I still remember the novelty of memory cards, and having the ability to take your saves to a friends house and continue where you left off. The marketing was pretty weird, as is Sony's signature style. But it was all part of the experience. This was something new, something revolutionary. Even as a kid, I could see that. Gaming was always a part of my childhood, but the PS1 is where it became an obsession. Yes, I am a Sony fanboy and I openly admit it, but this console is the reason why.

Crash Bandicoot, Die Hard Trilogy, Bloody Roar, Syphon Filter, Abe's Oddysee, Worms, GTA, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear, G-Police, Harvest Moon, Tekken, Theme Park, etc. These are all series/games that I will always treasure and this big old grey box will always be a huge part of my gaming identity ^_^

Editing … I didn't think too much about it like you, I just bought one with my wages one week and continued gaming just like before. But I'd being making the generation jumps for over a decade I guess. Atari 2600 > Commodore plus 4 > Commodore 64 > Nes > Mastersystem > megadrive > Snes > Commodore Amiga

Editing … A ps1 was my first system. I got one for my 5th birthday with a copy of A Bugs Life, one of my earliest memories. Before that, my sister had both a ps1 and a nes, but I always preferred ps1. Funny enough, I haven't played half the games you mentioned and the only one I care about is Metal Gear Solid. Spider-Man, Silent Hill, Spyro the Dragon, Final Fantasy VII, Twisted Metal III, Harry Potter, Jersey Devil, and A Bugs Life are the things I remember playing.

Editing … ^ My introduction to Final Fantasy was another monumental shift for me, so I always remember the other games before that shift. After that it was story-driven games I craved. The games I mentioned are special to me, as they represent the "old" Silent Gamer.

Editing … Oh yeah, FFVII was the first FF released in Europe. I can't remember now if I played an earlier one on SNES emulator first or not, but I was massively into RPGs back then.

Editing … Now you stirred up old memories and I feel the urge to replay Wild Arms. I'm never gonna finish any games at this rate.
