Looks lile this will be my next adventure. I've never watched any Westerns until today, or maybe the dubious #The Lone Ranger. Look forward to exploring the genre :)

Editing … I really liked No Country For Old Men (which is only a semi-western), Unforgiven, and Dead Man.

Editing … I wasn't really a fan of No Country for Old Men, but I rarely like the Coen brothers. Unforgiven sounds familiar, is that Eastwood? I just bought #The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for 75p/90¢.

Editing … Yeah it's Eastwood. I didn't find it memorable but it was an enjoyable one time experience. I've seen bits of The Good... and doubt it's my thing, I saw The Treasure of the Sierra Madre once and it didn't stick with me at all.

I'd really like to see more open world wild west games. Sure, we have Red Dead, but some other takes on the genre would be interesting. A Far Cry survey once listed a wild west scenario as a potential future setting. Assassin's Creed could also give it a shot, I've always liked the idea of an Assassin with a cowboy hat.
and not every third-person western would play just like Red Dead. GTA has competition from Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs, Mafia, Watch_Dogs, surely open world westerns could find some differentiation as well.

Editing … I'm honestly surprised they aren't more prevalent myself. Although I'd personally blame the rise of the Post-apocalyptic "genre" of games. They often offer the same level of lawlessness and resource management that Westerns provide. Small scattered settlements, lack of advamced technology, that sort of thing. And post apocalyptic allows for monsters and zombies, thereby bypassing all the moralistic "videogames let you kill people" bullshit that hampers developers.

Editing … As far as I know, it's been a long time since a western film has taken the world by storm. That's why the creators of Red Dead Redemption were told that no one would buy their game. They were wrong though, so you never know.

Editing … I played RDR for like 30 minutes and it was mostly cutscenes and I didn't like the horseback riding controls. Maybe if I kept playing I would've gotten used to them but I unno.

Editing … The thing I didn't like about the horseback riding was that I kept having to look at my mini-map to make sure I'm going the right way when I should have my eyes on the environment. Big arrows like in Sleeping Dogs probably would have felt out of place in that game though.
