This game really tries to force the player to romance Ashley if you play male Shepard. At one point in the game I was forced to kiss her even though I never selected any romantic dialogue options, so I alt-f4ed and tried again. This time I selected more terse, dismissive options, and I was still forced to kiss her. A third time I was outright rude, and I was still forced to kiss her. The fourth time I selected every single renegade option to be as mean as I could, and shouted at Ashley to go away before our conversation could even start, which finally shut down her romance, thank god.

Editing … Yeah, I'm not sure how often it autosaves, but at one point I checked the timestamp on my last autosave to find out, and it was from over half an hour before. Had to learn to quicksave often. Kinda makes me glad the combat's really easy (also glad it's easy cuz it has pretty rudimentary combat mechanics)

The best thing since Star Wars! An experience that's hard to describe...you just have to play it. The moment I became a Spectre....wow....just wow. Maybe the best story of all time in a video game.

I am liking this way better this time around. I guess it is easier to enjoy a game with lots of dialogue when you are no longer a dumb kid that ignores the dialogues :p

Started the game with multiple classes but it quickly became clear the game just wanted me to pick Soldier, none of the other stuff felt useful. The people in the game look extremely creepy; I'm surprised people complain about The Polar Express but not this. I think I even prefer the Oblivion people. A few hours in, nothing about the story or setting or characters really grabs me. The game seems to think that anything set in space will automatically be cool. The RPG mechanics are ok, but I've played many games with more interesting RPG mechanics. The shooting works fine and some of the environments are very impressive, but mostly I just don't get it.

Editing … It's a fair comment actually, if you don't like shooters you wont like it. The talking drives me mad now I've beaten it, I should probably lower the score a little.

Editing … I wouldn't try to argue ME1 has fantastic shooter/RPG gameplay or brilliant graphics/animation (although I do think it looks a lot better than Oblivion), those elements of the game are good enough in my book but they're not the game's strengths. It's the characters, the choices and consequences, the story and the sense of a wider universe that make ME1 awesome.

Man, ME1 is so much worse than I remember from playing it five years ago, and it's astonishing how dramatically ME2 managed to improve everything. It's a more enjoyable experience on PC, but on consoles it's simply painful, with issues including an awful framerate, frequent texture pop-in, awkward cover shooter controls, weak friendly and enemy AI, and a mess of an inventory system

That's not to say it's all bad, with certain aspects being downright impressive. Bioware sets the standard for breadth of voice acting which is even included for frivolous things like the codex, and it's all generally top-tier in quality. The writing can feel a little derivative, but a lot of the characters manage to truly shine. The ships, aliens and weapons have a fairly sleek sci-fi look, and if there's one thing ME1 did better than it's sequels, it's giving its universe an immersive feel, with a far less linear structure and nice touches like having to use the airlock to depart from the Normandy.

Wow! What a game, what a story! I can't believe I've waited that long to play it. Some parts of the gameplay can be a bit tedious but my experience with Mass Effect was still way better than what I anticipated.

Mass Effect 2 has just become my most anticipated game right now.

Many consider ME2 to be the objectively better game, but ME1 was the first plunge into what a galaxy-spanning shooter RPG could be, and overall what it was was awesome. Though retrospectively shallow, the dialog options and amount of narrative choice in the game was a major selling point and the lore and world-building were fantastic. ME had an interesting story with well-crafted, memorable characters, and the ability to influence said characters yourself, which wasn't entirely new to RPGs, (but seeing it done on a galactic scale) was novel enough to make it feel like a great, new experience. When it comes to gameplay, ME2 and 3 did smooth out the shooter aspects abit more, but I've always felt they oversimplified the RPG elements (such as character leveling and weapon customization) unnecessarily, and I still prefer ME1 for these aspects.

The game that made me love the Mass Effect series, before it became about your mutlicolor ending and which waifu you wanted to sleep with. A really nice space opera feel with memorable characters, before they pandered to the fans.
