Kala is the second studio album by English-Sri Lankan recording artist M.I.A., released on 8 August 2007 by XL Recordings. The album features musical styles including dance music and makes extensive use of South Asian music such as that of the urumee, a drum used in gaana music native to Tamil Nadu, India. It was mainly written and produced by M.I.A. and Switch, and features contributions from Timbaland, Diplo, Afrikan Boy and The Wilcannia Mob. M.I.A. named the album after her mother, in contrast to her first album Arular, which was named after her father, and stated that her mother's struggles in life are a major theme of the recording. She began recording the album in early 2006 and worked on the tracks in various locations around the world, including India, Jamaica, Australia, Liberia and Trinidad.     By the way, I had no idea that Paper Planes would make M.I.A. world famous. When I first listened to it at my editor's desk, I thought it was awesome with the gunshot sounds and everything. But I always wondered whether M.I.A. would try to make it into a hit, because at the time, she chose "Boys" as the lead single. Then all the alternative rock stations started playing Paper Planes. And the rest is history.

    I was the music editor at my college newspaper when we received this album. It blew my f***ing mind because there was nothing quite like it at the time. There were tons of club dance ideas bouncing around in every song, from both Timbaland and Maya (a.k.a. M.I.A.) Arulpragasm. Our desk received a ton of boring s**t, but just from listening to this, I knew that M.I.A. was the real deal. And sure enough, everyone talked about this album for the entire year. And man, I was torn about whether to choose Kala or In Rainbows for best album of 2007. It was one of those years.
