Just a reminder that this game gets really, really good after 30 hours of gameplay. Only 30 hours. I swear it's not a waste of time.

Wait, what's this? A reasonably written, and well backed-up article about the XIII games? Someone who actually looks at the games for their own merits? Someone who isn't blindly hating a game for no real reason, just to be cool and follow the popular crowd? WHAT MAGIC IS THIS?! :O

But seriously though, I agree with many things said in this article. Very good read, don't agree with everything but it's nice to see someone who isn't hating on XIII for once. The game had serious flaws, and it doesn't compare to the classics, but that doesn't really mean it's a bad game.

Editing … That's why I don't get all the whining that FFXIII "isn't Final Fantasy." The series is always re-inventing itself. My understanding is there is no single, definitive "Final Fantasy" experience. I haven't played them but my bf likes them enough, and just from watching him play, I really enjoy Lightning as a character.

Editing … Even though my hatred for FFX is bigger than the internet itself, the game has elements that are common and belong in the series. Just like XIII. Calling it "not a Final Fantasy" is such a vague and a cop-out argument. I can understand why people dislike the games though, they are indeed a dissapointment specially after XII which was great.

Editing … Come to think of it, the only difference between then and now I can see is that the FFXIII series seems to take itself more seriously, despite its silly moments like Chocolina and other off-beat characters. I think that just has to do with the differences in technologies though, because story-driven games as a whole tend to be more "serious" now.

Editing … Well, for a long time fan of FF like myself there are indeed many differences in terms of tone and progression. I don't think the story takes itself more serious than say VII, VIII or X, the one true and most significant difference is how they chose to tell the story (without an audience proxy, or much exposition). They went for a more "lore-style" type of story, kind of like Demon's and Dark Souls where you could read descriptions about certain things to learn more about the world. The problem is that the game tried to mix that with cutscenes that were more focused on character development, and the storytelling lost focus. Demon's and Dark Souls' lore-style story worked because the game focused on that kind of storytelling thoughout the whole game, with no cutscenes or character interactions. It felt like they were cramming both kinds of storytelling in the game, without realizing that both at the same time can go pretty bad.

Editing … Yeah, the sequels didn't help. XIII was pretty conclusive and self-contained, I cannot imagine a continuation from that other than some really contrived ideas...

I never liked Final Fantasy games, I never consider them of my taste or if they were worth of my time; any of them ever got me interested, I decided to give a try to the series with it's latest installment, after I played through this game I realized how wrong I was. The story was good, a little complicated maybe to understand everything going on the first time, the characters were likable, nice visuals and good RPG action and adventure. I may not be a Final Fantasy fan, but I know a good game when I see it, and this was a very fun and enjoyable video game, from top to bottom.

A cinematic masterpiece with an intense battle system and a journey about moving around in a straight line for 80 percent of the game. Well, not really, but it was close enough to a linear path. People didn't like this and I can understand why.

In my opinion, Final Fantasy IX and FFX belong to the best games of all time. FFXIII is not nearly as good as those games, but it is nevertheless a good game - no more, no less. I absolutely hated the combat system of this one and needed half of the play time to get used to it. The graphics are outstanding, the video sequences are astonishing and the soundtrack is good. I love the linearity of this game as well as the Crystarium which shares similarities to FFX's sphere grid. The characters are alright even though they aren't as likeable as the characters of FFIX and X. The story can get quite confusing. Some of the boss battles are annoying. The weapon upgrade system is cool although it's not really necessary during gameplay.

Not a great game but not the abomination detractors claim either. Yes, it's very linear (though not far from FF X or heck FF IV) and yeah the script is a mess, but the battle system is very fun, if a bit simplistic. The character designs are actually a step up from recent entries in the series, and the soundtrack is a keeper. A lot of the game design is inherently divisive, but if you're open-minded it's worth checking out.

This is the only game I love and hate with equal passion. There's so much wrong with it, yet somehow, this game got under my skin and I kept returning and thinking about it weeks upon completion.
Pros: Great characters that you'll care about, good story, generally good music and voice acting, flashy fighting system, slick menus, strangely addictive
Cons: Abysmal level design, overall poor art and game design, the pacing of the game is wildly inconsistent, the horrendous spikes in difficulty, problematic defensive AI of your companions, weak summons
