For a long time I assumed this page didn't exist anymore because I had Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D ranked as one of my top ten favorite games and it changed to the original SNES game after the merge. I guess I'll just rank this then. I think someone thought the 3DS game was a remake of the SNES game or something.

I’m not very good at platformers. It’s a genre that requires expert precision and timing - two things I lack. But I got this in the ‘Too many Games’ offer in June, and loved it.

It’s tricky, but rewarding and the ability to buy extra lives with banana coins removes the need for World 1-1 grinding. Some other platformers could learn from this (Mario, I’m looking for you).

Leery at first about a retro-remake -- blown away by the amazingness of this game! A worthy 4th installment.

The revival of the Donkey Kong Country series was to me perhaps the most exciting new to come out of the Wii era. Returns does a good job of showing why it should have never gone away so long to begin with. Retro does a great job of rebuilding the gameplay of DKC so that while it will remind players of the original games to a certain degree, it is improved and modernized. Retro also has new gameplay ideas that add more variety to the usual mix of platforming, barrel blasting, and cart riding. Few peers can match this game in terms of level design and variety. Also, here is a modern Nintendo platformer that is actually challenging and will test your skills like the good old days. It's hard to believe DKC has become the Nintendo platformer for advance players compared to Mario. Also the bosses are fantastic for a platformer. Retro really puts the Mario teams to shame in this regard.

As good a lot of the nuts and bolts are however, it has one serious problem: the motion controls. While

I'd like to nominate 'Donkey Kong Country 4' for the worst AAA game of 2010 because it's fundamentally broken. I paid over 30$ for it and had to force myself to enjoy this XBLA-esque masochistic 2D platformer until the game wouldn't let me progress any further because I didn't manage to hit some animal 10 times on the head without getting hit more than 4 times? 30$ for a total of ONE hour of agonizing hatred. Fuck this game and fuck everyone who was responsible for its creation.
We don't live in the early '90s anymore Nintendo, quit being so arrogant and stop assuming everyone enjoys having to replay the same fucking level over and over again. I play videogames for the experience, not for the challenge. If I've bought it I have every goddamn right to complete your silly videogame. Fuck off with that noise. It baffles my mind how anyone could publish a game like DKC4 for 60$ in 2010 and get away with it.

Editing … I'm happy that there are still some challenging big budget titles between all the cinematic "press A to win" crap. Not to mention that the game is famous for being one of the hardest recent Nintendo titles. Everyone should know this by now.

Editing … Wasn't DKCR originally $50? Anyways, I seriously doubt it had a big budget. It's a 2D platformer after all. The development budget was probably modest, definitely not AAA level. As for the difficulty, it was designed to be old-school, hardcore game, what else can you expect from a traditional 2D platformer? Challenge is part of the experience.

Editing … It's a big budget 2D platformer with old school difficulty (that's what I meant). They aren't that common anymore. Anyway if you die too many times you are given the option to have "Super Kong" play through the level for you. There is really no reason to complain.

Editing … @Magwaza: Is that so? How many times do I have to die before the game let's me skip a boss fight?
