Finally took the plunge and bought this on GoG. Damn do those visuals ever hold up well in full HD. No gamepad support though, and keyboard and mouse controls are a little awkward. Why, why does it have to be so hard to get a definitive version of this gem of a game?

This game sold so badly that in Canada it came for free packaged with string cheese. https://www.destructoid.com/oh-canada-beyond-good-evil-is-a-cheese-pack-in-122277.phtml

I was able to beat it so fast a couple of weeks ago that I did a new playthrough on my gamertag and cleaned up those achievements I've been missing for the last 5 years lol. Finally, 200GS.

Editing … I bought it on PSN and was annoyed it didn't have a Platinum. Just as well. Thought it was a pretty shoddy port anyway. Kept coming unstuck from ledges I was sidling across and plummeting off the game map requiring reloading my last save point.

Editing … Oh jeez, I've played the HD version 3 times now and only encountered that issue in one of my playthroughs (though it did kill me like 3 times before it finally cut that shit out). I've encountered some other random glitches, but most of them were harmless. Looking at Ubisoft's current gen games, though, technical problems from them don't surprise me anymore lol. ETA: I do find the HD version preferable mostly because I feel like it controls better, especially with the combat.

Editing … I recall it happening in the Nutripils factory right before you see an Alpha Sections guard without his helmet, and in the stealth sequence right before you're caught and chased by General Kehck (and yes, I did have to look up his name). In the former case it would drop me entirely off the map, forcing me to lose all progress after my last save, and in the latter it would usually drop me on the head of a guard, resulting in instant death from the security drones. I also recall a host of camera issues, with one particular WTF moment occurring during a looter chase where a door slams shut behind your hovercraft after you pass through it. In my case the camera ended up trapped on the wrong side of the door. Overall for me the HD visuals didn't make up for all the lousy drawbacks. Since Steam now offers refunds I might give that version a go some day.

Editing … lol yeah there was a crazy amount of camera issues. I was able to tolerate those a lot better than the asshole final boss though. Today was the first time I beat him without dying, but I still had to use 2 K-bups and I had like 15 hearts' worth of health at the end.

My initial impression of BG&E was that it was a little cheesy, but that was probably a show of its age. Regardless, by the end I was floored by what turned out to be a deep story with well-expressed emotion and wonderful presentation value. Melee combat is slightly mundane, but other than that, everything's done right including an urban twist on Zelda, fun stealth mechanics, and well-implemented co-op. It's all sweetened with a cinematic camera, atmospheric music, and powerful voice work. Hard to believe it was originally made in French.

A truly beautiful game, with an excellent story, compelling characters, good controls and fair challenge; what I specially love about this game is that it doesn't abuse of it's charm; most games would throw at your face it's awesomeness thus making it look silly rather than great, but not BG&E, it knows what it is and what it wants, and is the kind of game you fall in love with; truly worthy of it's legacy.

When I feel tired of Zelda putting me through the same old motions, I have to thank games like these. The characters are so down to earth and relatable, the exploring, it reminds me of Zelda, the puzzles, the dungeons. It all works so well together. The only thing holding it back, it's too criminally short for its genre. Oh would I have given anything for this game to go on longer. I also wish it performed better so we could get more of these awesome games. Come on Michel Ancel, come on, Ubisoft, let's pump out Beyond Good & Evil 2!

The cult hit Beyond Good & Evil has a lot of cojones to borrow it's title from Nietzche. Is it well justified? Eh... Playing a strong female protagonist is a nice change of pace and the game does have a certain amount of originality, but the core gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. It does combine stealth elements with zelda-like combat and item collection, and even a little racing and space-crafting, but doesn't do any particularly well. Controls never feel tight enough, especially in combat. The game world is too small imo, as is the story, which doesn't really get interesting until it's pretty much over. The cartoony character designs with the serious story didn't jive with me. Not a bad game but nothing special in my opinion.

The plot is very interesting, and gets better at the end, but something is missing, some things should have happened but doesn't and a lot of things are just ignored. This game has a very nice gameplay, and good mechanics. The graphics are smooth and the soundtrack is amazing. The GameCube version is the best.

Yay for experimental games! It doesn't really have one main gameplay element to it; it's equal parts combat, stealth, photography, puzzle, and exploration. Some may say this lack of a specialty is a weakness for Beyond Good & Evil, but the game seems to be more about experiencing the planet Hillys and the truth behind the DomZ, the Alpha Sections and Jade than about mastering the gameplay... well, except for that infuriating final boss. It sort of reminds me of a point and click adventure in that sense.
