My god this game is mediocre; some parts of it like the music, combat, controls and especially the dreadfully imprecise platforming are objectively bad even.

Why is Alice Madness Returns still so expensive on Amazon ? :(
Who in their right mind would pay 23 Euro for a three year old used game?

You can get used copies of Skyrim & Uncharted 3 for 10 Euro each and they released in the same year as Alice. It's just not fair. #firstworldproblem

Editing … You're using the wrong version of Amazon -- prices on the DE site are always horribly inflated. Use the UK site. Here, 16.28 pounds (20.50 euros) shipped for a new copy from Denmark: http://amzn.to/Y8L7iI If you can get it used that's fine too though, as American McGee's Alice is now freely downloadable (though you still need to own the Madness Returns disc to play it).

Editing … I could never figure out though if I still need to insert a code to download the first Alice game from 2000 from the XBL store like Filly suggested, or if anyone who has as a (used) copy of the second game can get the first one for free. Guess there's not much I can do without a credit card except waiting a bit longer until the prices fall below 15 euro ...

Editing … Honestly, it's worth paying €23 for. It's a unique game when it comes to art style and storyline. It's far deeper in theme and subtext than any platformer I've played to date, with a subtle genuinely mature storyline. It's combat is somewhat reminiscent of Zelda games, but actually challenging and varied. I'd highly recommend it.

So in order to download and play the first #American McGee's Alice on Xbox Live you have to own a copy of Alice 2 (#Alice: Madness Returns); there's no need to input any code at all, right? I'm asking 'cause I plan to import a used version of Alice 2 from the UK and was wondering if I still get to play Alice 1 for free or not.

Editing … You do need a code, actually. But why bother with a used copy? Can't you just get it new for like 10 bucks? Also, I'd play the original Alice on PC if that's an option for you. It's not as buggy and you get to play it with a mouse and keyboard.

Editing … For some reason Alice 2 still costs 50 Euro on Amazon; and I do in fact own a physical copy of Alice 1 on PC but failed miserably getting used to its k/m controls. What's confusing though is the fact that you can download Alice 1 from www.xbox.com right now for free, so maybe you don't need a code for it after all?!

Editing … Well, EA did abolish season passes some time ago now, so it's possible they made all their season pass content free at some point. You'd still need the Madness Return disc to actually launch it, though, unless they patched that out as well. Also, they didn't actually change the controls for the console ports, so they feel identical to playing the PC version using JoyToKey. The first hour or two could be a bit rough since you'll need to manually aim your dagger/cards, but after you unlock the croquette mallet with its lock-on ability, combat will be trivialized.

This game could be a possible candidate for my list of favorite games of all time if only it was a better game; the story was perfect, I really cared about Alice and her dementia taking over her, these are really interesting settings and the dark mood in wonderland made it look fregin' awesome, I loved it; the controls are ok, but landing after jumping feels a bit slippery and it's hard to get a grip on it; combat is... ok, enough weapon variety to approach a situation. The rest is just nip-picking, if you have a soft spot for the game's flaws, you might find it very enjoyable; just don't loose your head...

If art style were the only thing that games were judged on, this game would be a 10. The presentation of the cutscenes and artistic style are fantastic. Unfortunately they're in a game with inferior visuals and outdated gameplay. Textures are muddy and blurry with tons of pop in, clipping runs rampant and most characters look like they're from an early PS2 game. The only visually impressive thing here is Alice's hair. Too bad more attention was paid to her hair than the uninspired platforming and repetitive combat that constantly repeats throughout the game. And if you narrowly miss a jump, how come Alice doesn't grab the ledge? Lara Croft was grabbing ledges 15 goddamn years ago!

The art style is one of the best I've ever seen, but let's be honest here, the controls suck and the camera just doesn't help. The enemies are just the same s*** all the time and the combat couldn't be more boring. The story is interesting, but the way this game present itself could be better.

The atmosphere, art direction, writing, and combination of environmental and direct storytelling are phenomenal. The combat is surprisingly skillful, requiring well timed dodges. Sadly, gameplay in the first half is rather repetitive. It starts to really shine in the second half with more variation, challenge, and an increasingly exciting story. Graphical glitches consistently detract from the otherwise enchanting experience.
