I finally got around to playing this great of the last gen and while I don't think it quite gets to the levels I've heard other put it at (top 10-15 of last gen) it's still definitely worth playing.

The game didn't quite hook me like I thought it would and I think that do with the combat. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the combat but it just felt cheap and aggregating at times and I feel it took away from my enjoyment of the game at times.

However nearly everything apart from the combat is fantastic. The setting and art style are both great. The story, while not anything revolutionary is a solid sci-fi horror with a strong ending. The inventory, store, upgrade workbench and variety of weapons are all welcome features and further immerse you in the Ishimura. Dead Space immerses you to an extent few games can even dream of. The sense of dread and isolation is unreal and even the small things like UI, and sound design contribute greatly to easily some of the best atmosphere in gaming.

When you play Dead Space, you are just on the Ishimura for 12-14 hours, fully immersed in it's world and its a horrible place to be in the greatest way.

    8.5/10
