Editing … I found out on Wednesday I have stage 2 chronic kidney disease. It's hereditary it seems as my mother has stage 3. So now I have to cut out salt almost altogether, so Chinese and kebabs are absolutely off the table forever. I can still make my own kebabs of course, without salt. I have to watch my potassium intake too so no bananas, and there's a few other little things I need to keep an eye on too. Luckily I hardly have to change my diet at all. I have to cut back a little bit on the protein and cut out my saturday night takeaway but my diet was almost there anyway. If it had been anybody else that was diagnosed they would be worried and confused about diet but I'm good, it's very rare I eat pre-packaged food, tins or jars, or even bread. The only thing I'm sad about is that I have to watch my tomato intake, so I can only have a curry once a week maybe and a chilli another day so that's like, 2 cans of chopped tomatoes, I could have more I guess but I'm only 45 I want to live until I'm 80 so why push it?. Oh, and seasoning my steak with salt is out the window too, I'm a little sad about that.

Editing … CKD is also closely linked to diabetes and high blood pressure, which of course my mother has so I need to watch sugar and carbs too. But I was already on it, it hasn't made a big difference to me really.

Editing … Wow, I did not expect that and I'm sorry to hear it. So that's why you were talking about kidney beans. That sucks a lot. Even tomatoes and bananas.... You are taking it pretty well it seems. I can imagine most in your situation would find it quite hard too even simply get rid of table salt let alone many of their favorite foods. I guess you'll get used to it but it's still shite to hear you have kidney disease. I guess it can be quite dangerous if you would just keep on eating whatever and it got progressively worse. It's good you can be disciplined with eating if you put your mind to it.

Editing … I can still eat most things as I'm only stage 2. All the healthy things are good: fatty fish, blueberries, vegetables(some certain ones in moderation) chicken, apples, bell peppers, pineapple, eggs, onions, garlic, mushrooms..... it's basically a list of what I eat anyway. Except apples, but I will start eating some next time I go shopping. I can even still drink alcohol in moderation too! But, worst case scenario, if I eat total shit and don't drink water etc the doctor said I could potentially need a transplant within 15 years, that's obviously worst case scenario though. But she did say my kidneys were like somebody 20 years older than me, so I don't expect to ever live to see 100 or anything.

Editing … Protein is still important but I can't eat too much, I can't eat like a bodybuilder for example. But a can of mackerel for lunch and a chicken breast for tea is fine. Or beans and lentils, somewhere in the range of 1g per kg of bodyweight or a little but more at the top end is fine. 2g per kg of bodyweight will likely come back to bite me later.

Editing … I just read that beans are the preferable protein type for kidney disease so maybe kidney beans are good for your kidneys after all. 2 grams sounds ridiculous yeah. People only need 0.8 g per kg but isn't 1 gram per kg more than you need then?

Editing … A lot of vegan pages are pushing beans as the best source as they do but all the rest, including the NHS, point to fatty fish. I'm going to continue eating all protein as I do now. A bit of everything is best imo, not too much of just one thing.

Editing … Those random pages have all the same issues as youtube videos, it's all a bunch of people who take one tiny part they like and ignore everything else. There are even people out there claiming carnivore diet reversed their kidney damage! And the worst thing is that people will see it online and believe it then make things worse, they could need dialysis twice a week or possibly even die. The thing I found confusing was all the contradictory information even on trusted pages like NHS. But that's because there are 5 stages and in each one the diet gets more and more restrictive. One page will say no sweet potatoes for kidneys but after lots of digging you absolutely can eat a couple of medium sweet potatoes a week in stage 2. Stage 4, I wouldn't push my luck.

Editing … But anyway, I have to go back in a year for more tests and I'll see then if I've maintained my kidney filtration rate or made it worse. I can make any future decisions based on that test, I just have to be smart now and trust the sensible experts that deal with this thing as a job.

Editing … I guess what you can eat depends on what your specific body can handle right now. It's not like your stage two is is the same as someone else's. If your blood work is stable or improving, I'm sure the doctor could look if some restrictions could be lifted. Everyone's kidneys get worse over time as we age, yours are just declining at a faster rate. If you could get that rate to slow down to maybe even normalize and take care of your kidneys, I don't see why you could not live to an old age.

Editing … I ordered myself one of those fitness watches. With diabetes and high blood pressure being so closely linked with CKD I figure I'll just keep an eye on the calories I burn each day, make sure them carbs aren't turning into sugar now I can't eat as much protein. I can check my heart rate and blood pressure and whatever else too. You never know, it might help me identify a problem.

Editing … Nope she's a typical entitled boomer, she hasn't taken any responsibility herself. She hasn't changed her diet, she still smokes. She's counting on the NHS giving her magic pills to make it all go away I think. My dad is the same, that generation born in the 50's just don't seem to understand some things. My grandad had a few issues when he got to about my age too, he had to stop smoking and fix his diet. He went all out and lived to be 83, so it works if you make those changes. He was born and lived before the NHS so I think he understood the concept of being responsible for your own health a lot more.

Editing … Ah yes. It's weird how boomers react to health problems. Also somehow really cheap when there are medical issues with their children. When there is an actual emergency like a fucking screwdriver in your eye. "oh let's not call an ambulance let's cycle through the snow to the GP". Seems like your grandad got it though. Yeah go be like grandad.

Editing … lol wut? As if having a risky operation and going on immunosuppressants for life is a better option than to try to live a healthy life. Also organ donations are really scarce. You have no guarantee you'll get it. Best try and stick with your own kidneys and leave the kidney transplants for people that really need them.
