Editing … I found out on Wednesday I have stage 2 chronic kidney disease. It's hereditary it seems as my mother has stage 3. So now I have to cut out salt almost altogether, so Chinese and kebabs are absolutely off the table forever. I can still make my own kebabs of course, without salt. I have to watch my potassium intake too so no bananas, and there's a few other little things I need to keep an eye on too. Luckily I hardly have to change my diet at all. I have to cut back a little bit on the protein and cut out my saturday night takeaway but my diet was almost there anyway. If it had been anybody else that was diagnosed they would be worried and confused about diet but I'm good, it's very rare I eat pre-packaged food, tins or jars, or even bread. The only thing I'm sad about is that I have to watch my tomato intake, so I can only have a curry once a week maybe and a chilli another day so that's like, 2 cans of chopped tomatoes, I could have more I guess but I'm only 45 I want to live until I'm 80 so why push it?. Oh, and seasoning my steak with salt is out the window too, I'm a little sad about that.

Editing … CKD is also closely linked to diabetes and high blood pressure, which of course my mother has so I need to watch sugar and carbs too. But I was already on it, it hasn't made a big difference to me really.

Editing … Wow, I did not expect that and I'm sorry to hear it. So that's why you were talking about kidney beans. That sucks a lot. Even tomatoes and bananas.... You are taking it pretty well it seems. I can imagine most in your situation would find it quite hard too even simply get rid of table salt let alone many of their favorite foods. I guess you'll get used to it but it's still shite to hear you have kidney disease. I guess it can be quite dangerous if you would just keep on eating whatever and it got progressively worse. It's good you can be disciplined with eating if you put your mind to it.

Editing … What kinds of foods are safest for you to eat now? I'm guessing low protein, low salt and low fat foods.

Editing … I can still eat most things as I'm only stage 2. All the healthy things are good: fatty fish, blueberries, vegetables(some certain ones in moderation) chicken, apples, bell peppers, pineapple, eggs, onions, garlic, mushrooms..... it's basically a list of what I eat anyway. Except apples, but I will start eating some next time I go shopping. I can even still drink alcohol in moderation too! But, worst case scenario, if I eat total shit and don't drink water etc the doctor said I could potentially need a transplant within 15 years, that's obviously worst case scenario though. But she did say my kidneys were like somebody 20 years older than me, so I don't expect to ever live to see 100 or anything.

Editing … Protein is still important but I can't eat too much, I can't eat like a bodybuilder for example. But a can of mackerel for lunch and a chicken breast for tea is fine. Or beans and lentils, somewhere in the range of 1g per kg of bodyweight or a little but more at the top end is fine. 2g per kg of bodyweight will likely come back to bite me later.

Editing … I just read that beans are the preferable protein type for kidney disease so maybe kidney beans are good for your kidneys after all. 2 grams sounds ridiculous yeah. People only need 0.8 g per kg but isn't 1 gram per kg more than you need then?
