Finished this a bit ago in my Uncharted series playthrough. I feel like the story didn't pay off in the end on this one. It had a real strong beginning but got a bit lost along the way. Combat and platforming were an improvement over 1 & 2 for sure. I'm also just not one for the desert settings....Like I already said before 3D is pretty dope for a cinematic game like this. Sad it fell out of fashion.

Editing … Uncharted 3 was kind of a mess, especially in the story department. Like that whole sequence to rescue Sully only to discover he was never abducted, nothing gained or learned along the way. An extended sequence chasing Talbot when Talbot has no reason to run from a lone Drake when he has backup present and has managed to hand Drake his ass at every turn. The whole "Nate's an overgrown kid larping as the descendant of a great explorer" aspect was interesting but poorly fleshed out. I also thought Naughty Dog overcompensated for those who said Uncharted 2 had too many extended combat sequences (which I thought was fine tbh) and crammed way too many puzzle and platforming sequences, which to me better served the game as a bit of variety and weren't the real meat of the experience. I don't think you even get into a proper gunfight until about a sixth of the way through the game! Uncharted 4 did all of these things better.

Editing … Yea, the whole drug angle was lame. I highly doubt I got so drugged out that I had a whole combat sequence in my head with flaming skull head guys. I hate the whole "drug induced sequence" thing that came around in that era. The Arkham games did it with Scarecrow and the Far Cry games do it a lot. I can't remember off the bat but I'm pretty sure there were more around that time as well.

Editing … I could never really get into uncharted. It's way too scripted for my taste. I really wanted to like it but I think action games should at least give you the illusion you have free will or are doing things according to your own will. I think for people who never played games do like these types of games though. My friend who never played games really got into one of the new Tomb Raiders which is essentially the same scripted approach. It gives a clearer path and objective to follow for them. It’s super funny to see people new to games apply real world logic to games btw. I would recommend back seat gaming with someone who has never played a game in their life. Even I could enjoy uncharted that way.

Editing … I feel like scripted games are my favorite games these days. I don't have the drive to explore open worlds like I used to. And my dumb brain likes being able to progress and complete things without wondering if I missed something.

Editing … I really get what you say. People back in the day would say playing games is something lazy people do but it actually takes a lot of mental fortitude to play and finish a lot of games. I guess if games taught me anything it is that. People today have discovered its way easier to just watch other people play games for them. Why put in the effort if you can just get the results instantly? If you’ve had a rough day and not feeling a lot of willpower to commit to playing a long game or playing open worlds absolutely can feel like torture and just more work if you’re not in the right mind-set. I’m not particularly fond of open worlds particularly or long games. I just do not like when a game can’t get me to suspend my disbelief like Uncharted does. It’s like the game is literally telling me how to play it. I feel no agency in that. I find I am really enjoying short indie games recently. They don’t ask a lot of your time but they also leave room for my own exploration and good indie games give me experiences I have not found in any other games I played until now. I really like that variety. I just love A Short Hike for instance. It gives you the goal of climbing to the top of a mountain in the body of a bird, but you can go about how you do that your own way. The vibe is so carefree and fun and the music is really good. Just a fun experience that relaxes you and makes exploration feel effortless and the opposite of daunting. It feels like such an honest game that does not pretend to be more than it is. I wish more games were like that.

Editing … I believe the term you're looking for is "player expression." As much as I love them, Naughty Dog could try adding a bit more here and there.

Editing … I don't think I've sunk 500 hours into any single player game. Across all my playthroughs of the Witcher 3 it's probably the closest and I plan to play it again someday which might get me over the mark. But that game is one in a million, and Dying Light 2 doesn't look like a game of the year contender, never mind game of the generation. Techland later clarified it would take more like 20 hours to complete the main story, but it has become an agonizing trend that game studios think it's a selling point that their title takes hundreds of hours nobody has to complete.

Editing … I almost bought A Short Hike when it was on sale during the holidays but it looked like something I'd fall asleep playing. Not to say it's a detriment to the game, more a lack of my ability to stay awake after a long day of work on something exploratory. I don't think the Uncharted games have that expression by design. You're playing through a movie as Nathan Drake, playing it a different way would have to require very different storylines to unfold.

Editing … "player expression" does sound like a good word. Thanks Sammich. Linear story driven games do indeed need to lead you through the story and you can’t do whatever you want, but maybe in Uncharted it’s just too literal for me. It’s literally something that could be a movie and me playing it does not add anything to the experience for me. Maybe that’s it. I can’t “express” myself as a player. It feels like I’m just an inconvenience to the story.

Editing … Lol I fall asleep to games all the time btw. I can never stay up very late. I fell asleep during A Short hike too but only because it actually made me want to play more and stay up passed my bedtime. I remember one time I was so tired but I still wanted to play some Windwaker… I fell asleep during the file select screen…. When I woke up the next morning, I thought the sound was muted because I could not hear the file select music but when I turned up the volume to the max I realised my brain had filtered out the looping melody completely. I could hear other sounds but not the music. After a few minutes I could hear the music again though. It was super freaky.
