Hey fellas, I'm curious, why is Oblivion so high up here?

Editing … Oblivion was my first open world RPG and the sheer scale/detail of it blew me awayI can understand people who played Morrowind first and went in with expectations being a touch disappointed the setting in Oblivion's more generic but it's still an awesome game.

Editing … I actually played Oblivion before Morrowind, but when I return to it, I wouldn't be shocked if I enjoyed it more. I never got to experience any of the major questlines, and I often hear that Oblivion has the series' best quests. Skyrim, being my first open world RPG, is still my favorite :p

Editing … Oblivion was my first WRPG and at first I didn't like it because I expected more from the story and controls and music and graphic style. It did grow on me thanks to its overworld, character customization, and immersion though.

Editing … Oblivion should've been more linear and contained more explanations on how to play. Also it should've been released for handhelds because a game like it doesn't work well when you're kicking back in front of a TV.

Editing … Oblivion's a game I play for hours at a time, it doesn't feel handheld to me, especially since it requires a lot of buttons, though it would kind of be impressive to have such a big game be portable. I would have liked more explanations on how to play. It took me like over 50 hours to find out that wearing armor reduces magic power. I restarted the game once again cause of that cause it ruined my build. If it was more linear though, it wouldn't exactly be an Elder Scrolls game. Might as well call it something else.

Editing … "Adding more handholding rarely improves a game--it's more normally what can drag a game down" I'd say it's a balance thing. Feeling lost and confused is my least favorite thing in games. But too much hand holding can be eye rolling and make me feel like the game doesn't need me. I'd rather too much handholding than too little though.

Editing … People tend to give older games some slack for doing the best with what they had. Combat in action RPG's like Deus Ex feel downright unplayable by today's standards, but since the gameplay is more about fucking around with the world and finding interesting solutions to problems based on how you've outfitted your character, people still loved it. If DE: Human Revolution still had the same shortcomings I doubt anyone would be talking about it positively. In my opinion Oblivion and Skyrim still have stilted, awkward combat and movement, and the wow factor of their open worlds are considerably more muted after Morrowind, though I'm really not equipped to give in depth critiques of either. I've only clocked about a dozen hours between them since I literally have a hard time staying awake while playing.

Editing … "today's standards" Either I like something or I don't. If I like something, then I might also be impressed by what it was capable of at the time, but I have to like it first. I don't like playing Morrowind, but I like playing Oblivion and Skyrim. I find Oblivion and Skyrim impressive but not Morrowind. I don't find the combat and movement awkward in Skyrim, to me it was a MASSIVE improvement over Oblivion. It doesn't make sense to me that Dues Ex would be less playable now than when it came out because it's the same game. Maybe it's because I don't really focus on buying new stuff.

Editing … Well bully for you, but the bottom line is that outdated mechanics or controls are going to bother most people in modern games more than they did in older games, and that is perfectly understandable. GTA III was a revolutionary title. It blew people's minds. Try playing it today. It doesn't even have proper third person camera control and the lock-on shooting is an awkward mess. This was "forgivable" in 2001. You can't expect every developer to make their every mechanic timeless and beyond improvement. However as genres and mechanics become more refined, newer games are expected to keep up with the tide, and if they don't it breeds disappointment and resentment, which is again, perfectly understandable. "It doesn't make sense to me that Dues Ex would be less playable now than when it came out because it's the same game." Uh, yeah, and I didn't suggest otherwise. The point is nobody is going shit on the Walkman because it doesn't perform like an iPod.

Editing … That's not at all what Sand is saying, if anything you're agreeing with his argument. What he is saying is that if VHS tapes would first appear now, when we already have BluRays nobody would care or buy VHS. Why would you? There's far better alternatives out there, and don't you even tell me you'd be on board with it. If PS5 had the graphical capability of a SNES would you care? Maybe out of curiosity, but it would be a horrible decision that everyone would shit on, not because people hate SNES, but because PS4 and XBONE exist and it makes no sense downgrading again once you've upgraded.

I'm weird enough that I don't expect people to think the way I do. At most, it was bad wording, but I imagine that everything I've ever written has had bad wording so that should just be par for the course.
