With Sunset Overdrive you get the feeling that Insomniac made exactly the game they wanted to make. For better or worse they made the game exactly how they wanted, no compromising, no making sure it appeals to everyone, just what they wanted. That is both the strength and weakness of S.O. What it focuses on it nails: The traversal is fun and unique, it has wacky and varied weapons, an addictive combo system, and an emphasis on momentum and with those elements S.O achieves it's greatest feat it's simply fun. It's just a joy to play, many times I was going to a quest and I got distracted just grinding, getting a high combo and mowing down hoards of OD. The simple enjoyment of playing is idea many modern games can glaring overlook when they focus too much on story and cutscenes. It's a game first and foremost, and won't sacrifice gameplay to be a cutscene heavy, narrative driven game. I love many cutscene heavy, narrative driven games some of which do sacrifice gameplay for the sake of the narrative, but I can admire a game that knows what it wants to be and is focused on it. Sunset Overdrive certainly isn't perfect, it has its problems with being a bit repetitive has some uninspired missions, the beginning drags a bit. There are also no truly memorable characters something contemporaries like Saints Row IV certainly have. But overall Sunset Overdrive is a great game...a fun game with an addictive traversal system, fun combat, plenty of customization and upgrades and a vibrant world making it something of a breath of fresh air. If you just want to sit down and have some fun you can't go wrong with Sunset Overdrive.

    8.5/10
