David Lowery really likes Terrence Malick, well that's the impression I've been given so far anyways. Ain't Them Bodies Saints felt heavily influenced by both Badlands & Days of Heaven, and if we ignore Pete's Dragon (Cause I doubt there's any trace of Malick inspiration in that film), A Ghost Story continues to illustrate just how much Lowery loves/is influenced by Malick (though it's not so direct/obvious this time around). To best way I can describe his latest features is by saying this: It feels like the concept of this film came into fruition for Lowery as he was having an existential crisis watching The Tree of Life - I honestly cannot describe it any better. Even though I haven't seen much of what last year had to offer, I cannot imagine I'll find a film more complex or one so hard to unravel/pin down then A Ghost Story. I went into it with one expectation/assumption, given what little I knew about it, and soon found out I wasn't even close in my assumption. To say Lowery has a lot to say in this feels like an understatement, cause god damn does it feel like he is just daring the audience to try to figure out just what this is all about. At times it's a meditation centered around life/death, love/loss. At times it's a full blown existential crisis about the afterlife and a meditation about the futility of ones/anyone's existences in the grand scheme of things. And to top it off for good measure Lowery does a bit of time fuckery, just in case you're head wasn't spinning fast enough. To say this film can be overwhelming at times is an understatement, making the film easily not for everyone - undoubtedly this is a a polarizing experience. For me, I enjoyed every bit of it. I was with the movie every step of the way. I found myself compelled by the films ideas, the statements (that I could pick up anyways) that Lowery is trying to make, and even found myself emotionally invested into the "bed sheet ghost man" character. If you do end up watching this then the best advice I can give is be prepared, you're in for one hell of an experience.
