As a screenwriter Taylor Sheridan has been on a roll over the past few years. It started with Sicario, which I thought was fantastic, and then it continued with Hell or High Water, which I thought was fantastic. Now here comes Wind River, and while the roll hasn't necessary come to a stop it has certainly slowed down a bit. I think this is in large part do to Sheridan taking up the task of directing this time around. Wind River is certainly not a badly directed film, but it does certainly feels weaker in comparison to his two previous screenwriting efforts. Honestly, a part of me isn't all that surprised. Sicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose track record speaks for itself, and Hell or High Water was directed by David Mackenzie, who I though did one hell of a job. Unlike Sheridan both are seasoned and it shows in those works. While I cannot say the same for Mackenzie (cause I haven't seen enough of his work), I could see in Sicario the touches that make it a film by Denis Villeneuve. Wind River fells kinda basic in comparison honestly - generic almost. Competently done, no doubt, but doesn't have much of a punch behind it as I would have liked to have seen. Enjoyed my time with it and could see what Sheridan was going with it/saying, but just never felt all impacted or "wowed" by it. Wind River is a solid effort, good in its own right but not something that will blow you way.

Editing … I wasn't pleased with Wind River, everything it had to say came out so blatantly. Some of the individual scenarios and things they wanted me to go along with were just dumb.

Editing … So Denis Villeneuve = confirmed best in hollywood right? He's one of the only directors who can attract me to a work just by having his name attached to it.

Editing … Yeah it was a bit too on the nose/blunt with it's message and honestly he doesn't do much with it other then "yeah this shit sucks" - could of been executed better, def. Works best as a "genre exercise", and I was fine with that. Also sure why not when it comes to Villeneuve, regarding modern day filmmakers anyways. Really the only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Nolan.

Editing … JA Bayona would definitely be one for me, although The Impossible had its issues. He's one that's got me when he's onto another project, though.

Editing … Yea, it was a bit too on the nose. And I thought Renner had a particularly weak performance.
