The last three or so hours of this game are fucking dogshit. How did they fuck up this bad?
In the end, the game's just like everyone said. The gameplay's great, it's cool hearing NPCs freak out when you kill their friends, and the writing is horrendous.

Since Starfield's a very long game, I'm playing this alongside it. The gameplay's great, and the gore is consistent with Part I. When you headshot an enemy, bits of brain can smear walls and drip down, or splatter the ground. The game also runs just as smoothly as Part I, while looking top-notch. The writing is pretty bad though, as everyone warned it would be. None of Ellie's friends are interesting to be around, and the dialogue's either nothing to write home about, or outright cringe-inducing. I'm in Abby's campaign now, and while I thought they'd try to make me align with her, I'm surprised by how openly they're depicting her people as evil, though it still feels like the game's trying to get me to sympathize with them. They started a war with a cult by slaughtering their children, and now they're keeping a mass amount of prisoners from that cult, who they repeatedly torture. They're cowering in pools of their own blood, one man in a small cage immediately backed away in fear when I approached.

Abby has a fear of heights, so the camera gets vertigo and she starts panicking if you look down from high up. I think that's a pretty cool feature.

Also, the game has gotten a few good scares out of me. It gets pretty intense. I also love the new prone movement.

Editing … Some of the best AI I've experienced to date. It has been frustrating seeing how little game AI has advanced since something like FEAR, and better hardware has almost solely gone towards pushing more sophisticated graphics. But now a game from 2025 looks hardly any better than a game from 5+ years ago despite ever increasing hardware requirements, and they still can't be bothered to devote any dev time to more sophisticated AI. For me more than anything, TLOU 2 was a showcase for how kickass so many games could be in that department if high budget dev teams could be bothered to change their approach. I think the gaming community feels similarly when it comes to stagnant progress in visual fidelity and would respond well if AAA games were marketed with something new.

Editing … I've felt that exact same sentiment, likewise singling out FEAR, as well as STALKER (I believe I read its AI was based on FEAR's). In The Last of Us Part II, I've actually taken advantage of enemies thinking they could get the drop on me if I was out of ammo. I fire an empty gun so they'll exit cover, then switch to a loaded weapon. There are so few games where enemies will even note you're out of ammo. I Am Alive actually made it a core feature, which was really cool.

Currently watching an anime this season where that random NPC that everyone ignored decided to come back for revenge. At least I think that's what's happening? I'll figure it out next week, but I honestly thought that I was finished with stupid random plot reversals.
